I've got an internal DNS server for our AD domain. Now the funny thing is that I checked our internal DNS server and we are not using forwarders to our ISP's DNS servers. We do have a proxy appliance on the network but the ISP DNS servers are not configured on it either. We are surfing the web and websites are resolving. How is it that DNS is working without a forwarder in our internal DNS or anywhere?

Root Hints are present and used by default for MS DNS, so both of the answers above are correct.
Forwarders are optional. It can be argued that using Forwarders improves security slightly, however that is only true if you then go and prevent your Domain Controllers from talking to the outside world.
