Question

Dynamic DNS at home

Asked by: turbot_yu

I made a web, and want to host at home.

I connect to the ISP through a moderm(BNC connection) and a route at home.
The ISP sometime will dynamically assign an ip to the moderm, if the moderm restart.

I know I should register some service provider and set port forwarding in the router.
May I know the details of how to do with it. And any good service provider, stable and cheap.

Thanks.

I host my website at home. My provider has the options to open fort 80 internet and 25 email. Check with your providers. Also check DynDNS for the IP address if your provider changes your external IP address. Mine is dynamic and it has been the same ip for about 4 to 5 years so I am not using DynDNS at this time.

http://www.dyndns.com is actually fairly good for this type of setup, and it's free.

Most router have an section for dynamic dns. My router has the option for Dyndns and how to configure it. Check your router settings. Also check the Dyndns website for configuration setup. They have very good instructions. You can start here. http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/dyndns.html

You will need to forward port 80 to the internal IP of you web server.  Also you will want to change the routers port to something like 8080 so there are no troubles with getting the router login page instead of the web server.

I tried to set the port forwarding after login the router.
The setting is in the screenshot.

Now I can visit the dns from home at the same pc.
But at the office, I still cannot vist it.
Any suggestion?

If you want to access your router from outside your home network, there should be an option for Remote Management or something similar. This is disabled by default and is not recommended. Enable it and use your external IP address to access router.

Did you switch the management like mentioned. You will need to make sure the router is no longer listening on 80. Also what web server are you running?  Sometimes the web service has to be told what interface to listen on.  Take IIS for example you can make it listen on only 192.168.0.101.  Without fixing this it will ignore the requests that come in on your external IP because they will be address to that IP not 192.168.0.101.  I know also that WAMP will run fine from inside of a netwrk but you have to tell it to go "online" to accepts requests from the outside world.  If you are unsure of how to do this on the web server let me know and I can look into it if isn't a server i am familiar with.

I just want to configure the router at home. I tried to enable the remote control, but seems no difference.

If I have 2 PC connected to the router, the other PC can still go for internet?
I am running on IIS, may you give any detail suggestion?

Thanks.
