But then wouldn't it need to be on the hosts file on EVERY computer?

I need some help with something that should be easy but I am not sure how to do it.
I have established a VPN tunnel to a server with the State of Missouri. They have a webapp that we need to access through this tunnel. The web app just has a simple name and not an FQDN.
So, for example, once the tunnel is open, you open a browser and go to http://simpleapp
How do I put this in my DNS so that it will resolve to the IP of the web app so that my cisco will send it down the tunnel?
Do I need an A record or a new zone?

I would create a new zone. So if you need to create a DNS entry for ABC.COM, name your zone that.
Then inside the zone, create a host entry for the website you need to access... so for WWW.ABC.COM, create a new HOST called WWW with the appropriate IP address.
Hope this helps!

Please read the question. The problem is that this is NOT a FQDN. There is no www.abc.com - it is just http://abc and this is the problem.
Everything I try to do wants to use a FQDN.
Any ideas?
Are you using WINS on your network? You could create a new WINS static mapping to ABC and point it to the right IP.
If not, I would agree you could insert a host entry in the HOSTS file. If touching each machine is an issue, just copy out the HOSTS file from a network share to each machine via their login script.. ?

Hi,
You can put this into your HOSTS file.
