Have you checked if DNS server service is running?

by: ajwukPosted on 2009-11-03 at 11:59:48ID: 25732902

Hi,
Is the DNS server service definitely running on this 2003 server? Are there any errors in the event logs?

by: TonyEFPosted on 2009-11-03 at 12:04:23ID: 25732952

DNS server services is running and yes there is an errors in the DNS server logs as follow:
----------------
The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running, start the RPC service or reboot the computer. The event data is the error code.
----------------
I have restarted the server and have removed and reinstalled the Client for Microsoft Networks as suggested by Microsoft..

What account does the RPC service run under?  NetworkService or LocalSystem?

by: TonyEFPosted on 2009-11-03 at 12:15:33ID: 25733059

the account the RPC is using is --> NT Authority\NetworkService

by: ajwukPosted on 2009-11-03 at 12:17:05ID: 25733080

Ah. Change it to LocalSystem (you may have to reboot) and you'll probably find DNS starts working again. SP1 made this annoying security change, have you applied any hotfixes or service packs recently?

by: TonyEFPosted on 2009-11-03 at 12:23:39ID: 25733167

I am running SP2 and yes we update the servers every week as the security patches come out.. I have two other DNS server in another domain and they are working with the same credentials..

by: ajwukPosted on 2009-11-03 at 12:53:45ID: 25733490

Ok, scratch that then. The problem is basically down to the DNS service not being able to communicate properly with or rather not getting a response from the RPC service for some reason. Is the DNS server and/or client service running under any odd accounts by any chance?

by: TonyEFPosted on 2009-11-03 at 18:17:08ID: 25735837

nothing has been changed from a security standpoint..
