I have a computer in MI that I am attempting to log onto using a remote desktop connection. The computer uses novel for windows to logon even though it is no longer connected to the particular network that it was using the novel logon for. So the user selects worstation only and logs on to the computer (no network) this way. When i attempt the remote desktop connection I connect to the computer but it wont accept the username and password that the user has given me. What couldbe the problem?
IF you can actually see the logon screen, there is no problem with RDP. I sure think its the wrong username and password.
(also check with the that *user*, sometimes the Novell client is configured such a way that when he selects the "logon to workstation only" the Username and password is placed automatically in the respective fields. so the user would know the username but not the password.) I think he would be guessing the password or giving you the Novel Network password instead of the Local password.
I thought about that but would that work with the novell software? Thats whats poping up as the remote login rather than the windows login screen that normally does with most computers running xp pro.
If you click the "Workstation Only" check-box on the Novell Client screen, then you essentially bypass the Novell login and go straight to the Windoze login.
If the check-box is not available, then it has been disabled in the Client 32 configuration.
yeah thats what she does to log on and it works locally, but when i try that from a remote connection it wont let me do it. It says "failed to log into workstation, make sure your username and password information are correct". But I know she's giving me the right password because I talk her through stuff all the time while she's on the computer after she logs on with that information. The password is case sensitive i know but she's given me the information about which letters are uppercase and everything as well. I just don't understand what the problem could be here.
Have her log in, uninstall the Novell Client, restart, then log back in. Once that is done, have her check her services to make sure that Remote Assistance and RDP are enabled and running. Then, as asdlfk pointed out above, verify that the credentials you are using (logging in with) are in the RDP users. Otherwise, try logging in as the local admin...if she knows the password.
"Right click in My network places-->properties-->right click on the correct adapter (usually Local Area Connection)-->properties. In the window that pops up, uncheck the Client for Novell Networks. Just to note, ONLY DO THIS IF SHE IS NO LONGER UTILIZING RESOURCES ON A NOVELL NETWORK! I can't emphasize that enough. Uninstalling the client will be easier though.
Our company uses Novell and it works fine. If the user account is added to the Remote Desktop users, you should be able to login. That user must also be an admin and the password cannot be blank. I agree with the above, if you check workstation only, you bypass Novell.
