The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How so I configure the Netware client 4.91SP4?

Tags: Novell, Netware, 5, Client Software
I have a client that has a Novel Netware 5 server. They are currently using the microsoft client to connect and are having some performance issues with server resources. I thought I would try the Novell client to see if it improves. Keep in mind I know nothing about Netware. I downloaded the Novell Client 4.91 SP4 and installed it. It could not find the preferred server to log on. Their server is not IP enabled just IPX. The Microsoft client finds the server automatically. Is this the appropriate client version? Is there a configuration of the client I am missing? Their network consists of 3 workstations running WinXP and one Novell server connected via a Linksys gigabit ethernet switch. Below is the error I am seeing in their event logs which started this process.

IPX should make it easier but I haven't done a 4.91 SP4 install in a while. You might try an advanced install and make sure the IPX protocol is being installed/bound to the client. Once you have confirmed that you should be able to provide the Preferred Server, Tree and Context for their Netware Server.

Firstly, get rid of the horrible, atrocious Microsoft Netware rubbish. Believe me when I say I am being very restrained in my description of this abomination.

Install the client as mentioned above, IPX only.

How do I install this as IPX only? Is it a part of the client setup program or in the properties of the client once installed?

The *ONLY* reason to install Novell Client 32 for Winblows as IPX only is *IF* the NetWare server is configured to use IPX. You specified NetWare v5.x, which doesn't require IPX, and in fact prefers TCP/IP.

It does support IPX, in a legacy fashion, IF *specifically configured* to do so.

I suggest you first determine the proper transport protocol - TCP/IP or IPX.

Since the client computer was using the Microsoft client software, it's a good bet that you have IPX on the network.

Install the client doing a *custom* install.  Choose "IPX Only", but don't let it remove IP.  Enter the tree name when prompted.  After a reboot, you should be able to login.  If the login fails with a "user not found" or similar error, you may need to specify the context the user object is in.  There's a button to browse contexts on hte login screen,
Accepted Solution

I dunno. The NetWare server may have been set up to sue both TCP/IP and IPX, in which case he might as well do the Custom install and select TCP/IP only. No sense in continuing to use IPX if he doesn't have to have both running on the Winblows box.

I was shooting for the guarantee; in a small network like this one, there's real performance advantage with Ip or IPX, and IPX avoid having to figure out if SLP is configured correctly, etc.

Thanks for the help. I'll do a cutom install today with IPX only. They only have 3 workstations and none of them had IP installed prior to getting their Internet connection so I'm sure it's IPX only.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck. Let us know if you need any further assistance.
