The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to Execute process or an exe on remote machines.

Tags: VB.NET Windows Service
Hi, I have a windows Service running on a Server say for example Machine A. This Windows Service is used for distributing software across all the machines in the network ( OS is Windows 2003 in all the machines in the network. The Windows Service runs as a Domain Admin account). There is a UNC Share in all the machines and Windows Service copies the software packages from the server (Machine A) to this UNC Share across all the machines .
I need to execute the exe on the remote machine (say for example on Machine B) from machine A. The Exe queries the Active Directory (say for example the AD is on Machine C) and returns the result to EXE which is used for manipulating the Local Group Policy of Machine B.
How do i create a process on the remote machine and execute the exe on machine B from Machine A.

Hi Darylx, I tried executing the Exe using psexec. But the command did not retrieve the results from Active Directory ( ie Machine C). The psexec command executed without any errors (error code 0). I ran the psexec command with the domain admin credentials.
I tried running a *.cmd file which in turn calls /runs a *.vbs file which is used for querying the AD on Mach C. [Note: inside .cmd file i have a command to run the .vbs script file ie start <path>/xxx.vbs]
[psexec \\remotemach \\remotemach\path\xxx.cmd -u "username" -p "password"].
I also tried running directly the *.vbs file, [psexec \\remotemach cscript.exe \\remotemach\path\xxx.vbs -u "username" -p "password". The machine hangs for a long time and the execution was not completed. On the remote machine, when i saw the task manager, the cscript.exe process was running and after terminating this cscript.exe process, the psexec command terminated with an error code 1.
Note: i also executed the *.cmd file on the remote mach directly so as to verify that command executed without any errors. I was able to execute the same and get the results from the AD.
My query is whether it is possible to execute the *.vbs file within the *.cmd file through psexec?

So the .cmd and the .vbs are both stored on the network? And does the .cmd file have the path to the .vbs file? If so, copy the .cmd file locally, same directory where psexec is stored, and push it WITH psexec using the "-c" switch....

psexec \\remotemach -c -u domain\username -p password cmd.exe

Hi John, I was able to execute the command from the command prompt but i was not able to execute the same from the WIndows service. The process was getting created on the local machine instead of the remote machine.
I created a new process and ran the same from the windows service. The command did not return any results. I 'm writing the results to a txt file on the remote machine so as to verify the results.
When i execute the psexec cmd from the command prompt, i'm able to verify the results but when i execute the same thing from windows service, i dont get any results.
I have attached the code which i'm using in the windows service. WIndows service runs as a domain account.

            processInfo.Arguments = "\\remotemachine -c -u domain\username -p password *.cmd <path>\*.vbs"
'Note: the .vbs is file is located on the remote machine, psexec and *.cmd file is located in the directory of the local machine where psexec is stored.

I have *.cmd file (command file)  which is used for creating directories on remote machine and after creating the same, it calls a *.vbs file which is used for querying the Active Directory on another machine.
I need to do this programmatically using Windows Service(VB.NET)

So the .cmd file creates the folders on the machine it is run on?

And then calls the .vbs on the remote machine?

I am sorry to say, I dont code, so much out of DOS is out of my league.
