Can't boot normally. error c0000135

Tags: MIcrosoft, XP Home edition, SP2, "Stop: c0000135 Unable To Locate Component. "This application has failed to start because basegug32 was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"
This problem occurred a few days after a big cleanup of unneeded applications and spyware, but no apparent viruses. Removed much  garbage and shut down startup apps. Now, I can boot into safe mode only. First I did a system restore back to when the cleanup was finished and was working fine, (6 days ago), to no avail. I've tried shutting down all services and startup applications in msconfig, no help. I'm including the HiJackThis log, but I've already disabled the PC Pitstop entry at 016, still no help. I haven't found anything related to this file in all my searches.

Error message: "Stop: c0000135 Unable To Locate Component. "This application has failed to start because basegug32 was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

This is a 2 year old Dell with celeron 2.53GHz, 1280M RAM, nothing special really, except he has an external USB floppy and he leaves a disk in it all the time. I had unplugged the floppy and printer during troubleshooting.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sorry you had to reformat.
But it's for the best, and it's also a wise decision just reformatting and reinstalling.

Thanks!

I found the solution to this problem.  you must boot into a preboot enviroment such as ERD and load up the registry hives (or pull the drive, and edit the registry hives on another machine)  Search in the registry for the value of basegug32 (however this value is randomly generated by the malware, mine was named basefbeqt32) You should find it in HKLM/system/controlset00X/control/session manager/subsystems/
Windows %SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basegug32,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

you should change it to %SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Then attempt to boot the computer with last known good configuration.  (you might also have luck adding this key to current controlset, i havn't tried, because that's alot of typing.
