The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Intel Dual Core desktops vs. Dual Core AMD

Asked by nathaliev in General Computer Systems, Computer CPU Processors

Hi guys,

I'm in need of a new desktop, and shopping around. I'm trying to find something around $500-$600 ideally.  I do want a decent video card though. I tend to play things like World of Warcraft and Second Life and am starting to experiment with 3D/rendering apps.

Dell has some deals, for example their Vostro desktops.

I'm also searching eBay and finding a lot of AMD PCs  (mostly custom built, but that's ok)

I'm not really sure how to compare Intel Dual Core with AMD though. I've never had an AMD processor computer.

Plus AMD seems to have a LOT of different processors (AMD 64, AMD X2, Athlon  - with some being 64 bit)

Is there a general way of comparing the two?  Is 2.5 Ghz on a dual core Intel the same as 2.5Ghz on a dual core AMD?

Are there any disadvantages to going with AMD vs. Intel?

If I get a 64-bit AMD.. will I have issues running any Windows programs? All my software is 32-bit as I've never had 64-bit.  Can it run both 32-bit and 64-bit well?

I don't know yet if I'll install Vista or XP.  I don't really like Vista but I don't want an OS that will be outdated in a few years so I'll probably bite the bullet and have Vista installed.

Any feedback or opinions would really be appreciated.

Also if you can recommend a good source for custom build PCs that would be great too, unless the best deals are on eBay anyway.

Thanks
