Vista machine pings ok but loses browser connectivity regularly

Hi,

I am having a problem accessing the internet. I have just set up a new dell machine running Vista. After a reboot the internet works fine for a while but then every now and then it just stops working and won't come back until I reboot. While it happens a lot, there is no regularity to it. I haven't noticed any pattern or trigger in particular.

I can ping www.google.ie without a problem so it's not a DNS thing, and email works fine (through outlook). Sometimes Skype can get online and other times it can't seems strange.

A Win2k machine on the same LAN has no problem browsing while the Vista one is down.

Any ideas?

Greetings franksmyth !

1. Disable Addons.  Go to Tools > Add-on Manager, and uncheck the addons.

2. If no joy, reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced.  Click on "Reset" button. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

3. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

4. Uninstall and reinstall IE7. Make sure you have the latest updates.

Been away for a couple of days so I'll give those a try this eve.

When IE is down, so is firefox, so I'm not sure it's an IE problem as such.

I thought maybe something was blocking port 80 but then skype was still showing the "online" green tick so that made me doubt that theory.

Also, run this script to fix your connection. The script reinstall winsock, TCP/IP stack, and HOSTS file.

The problem seems to be gone now (although it wasn't resolved immediately after trying your suggestions).
