New Dell computers cannot get IP on occasion

Asked by jared52 in Networking Protocols, Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

I have purchased 3 Dell Optiplex 755s and on occasion the are unable to obtain in IP address when they boot up.  They are part of a 35 node network and all the other machines including the server are IBM.  As for network hardware, we have a Netgear GS748T which has all 48 ports in use and the server is doing DHCP.  No other clients have this issue.  One of them has it practically every week and the other two have only had it happen once or twice since they were purchased in early January 2008.  I have updated the firmware on my switch and made sure that spanning tree was off (a suggestion from IBM's support site).

I am stumped and the one machine that's having this issue is being used by the president of the company.  He knows how to fix it (just disable the NIC and then enable it), but that's not a permanent solution.

Oh and I have a new Dell D830 that I recently installed (2 weeks ago) and it too is experiencing this issue.Start Free Trial
