The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problems of DHCP or DHCP Relay Agent or other things?

Asked by tjie in Networking Protocols, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), TCP/IP

HI,

1. I saw  a lab as follows:

                     Clients LAN2: 192.168.50.0/24
   (RAS) ----------- ---------------------LAN2 --------------------[ XP1 ] 192.168.50.200
      |
      |
      |
   LAN1
     |
     | (LAN1: 172.27.0.0/16)
     | -------------------------------
     |                                         |
     |                                         |
     |                                         |
 [ DC1]                              [ DC2 ]

2. The Goal of this LAB: i) To Supply the IP address of clients at LAN2 THROUGH the DHCP Relay Agent (=RAS) which will get the above IP from the DHCP (=DC1); for Example: The IP Address of XP1 (192.168.50.200) (was Reserved at DHCP by key-in the MAC address of XP1) (For this i got it Correct at my trial)
3. Additional Information: i) DC1 is a DHCP Server, ii) RAS is a router and also a DHCP Relay Agent

4. DC1: i) It is a Windows 2003 Server, ii) The IP: 172.27.0.44, iii) The Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0, iv) The Default Gateway: 172.27.0.1 (RAS functions as Gateway), v) I installed DHCP at DC1: a1) Scope name: LAN2, a2) the starting address: 192.168.50.1, a3) The Ending address: 192.168.50.254, a4) The Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, a5) The first Exclusion address: (from 192.168.50.1 to 192.168.50.49), a6) The second Exclusion address: (From 192.168.50.150 to 192.168.50.254), a7) NOTE: The first Exclusion are reserved for Manual configuration such as printers, servers, etc; the 2nd Exclusion will be handled by DC2, a8) The Router (Default Gateway): 192.168.50.1, a9) The Domain Name: Boba.Walnut,

5.  DC2: i) Windows 2003 Server, ii) The IP address: 172.27.0.45

6. RAS: i) This is also Windows 2003 Server; There are 2 NIC cards here, ii) The first NIC is for LAN1 and the IP configuration is as follows: a1) 172.27.0.1, a2) Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0, a3) Default Gateway: Blank, a4) The preferred DNS server: 172.27.0.44 (DC1 as the first DNS server), a5) The Alternate DNS server: 172.27.0.45 (DC2 as the alternate DNS server), iii) The 2nd NIC is for LAN2 and the IP configuration is as follows: a1) 192.168.50.1, a2) The Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, a3) The Default Gateway: Blank, a4) The preferred DNS Server: 172.27.0.44 (DC1), a5) The Alternate DNS server: 172.27.0.45, a6) The "RAS" functions as DHCP Relay Agent to forward DHCP request
7. Configuration of RAS: i) it is configured "Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access", ii) Select "Custom Configuratio", iii) Select "LAN routing", iv) Under "New Routing Protocol", I select "DHCP Relay Agent", v) Under "New interface for DHCP Relay Agent", i highlight LAN2, vi) Under the properties of DHCP Relay Agent for the server address, i put the IP address of DC1 (172.27.0.44)
8. My Confusion: i) At "RAS": a1) The IP address of NIC1: 172.27.0.1 (Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0), a2) And the IP address of NIC2: 192.168.50.1, ii) But at the "Hard copy" of this LAB or System, i saw that it worked well (They showed the result that XP1 will get the IP address from DHCP, etc)
9. My Problem: i) I can not ping DC2 from DC1, ii) I can not ping XP1 from DC1, iii) It seems "Not Networking Connection" at all
10.  My Question: i) Is the Configuration of the above "RAS" POSSIBLE? (Please Elaborate Why or Why NOT possible), ii) I can not ping DC2 from DC1, why?, iii) The IP address of XP1 should be given by DHCP (with the help of DHCP Relay Agent), but it can not get it, iv) Somebody can point out where my mistakes are or This LAB does not make sense at all?
11. Thank you
