I figured it out. It was an issue of WINS being broken because of a Microsoft patch - something to do with enhanced security at the client. Once I remived the patch at the server, things started working again.

Question
xp client cannot connect to sbs2003
Starting yesterday all my clients (xp) are unable to access the sbs2003 server. I can ping the server from each client and they can see each other. I currently set one of the clients up with shares and the other PCs are able to get their work done after transferring the data to that PC, but again, the server is unreachable over the lan. I can access the server via logmein remotely and on site, but not for file access/printer access.

Check the event log of your server. Can you ping the server by name and by IP address?
