ESXi access via SSH!?

Hi all,
I have an HP server which is an ESXi host machine. SSH and Tech Support are both enabled in dcui. I have also made sure to have my user accounts via Vsphere client set up, yet I cannot access by SSH using putty. I enter the ip of the server, and am able to enter a username and password but I get "Access Denied" as a reply. I am able to log into another server in this way, so it is not technique that is failing me. Is it possible that my customer's version of ESXi is the free one and SSH is not supported? Any other suggestions that could be thrown my way would be greatly appreciated!

When you go to the host and then to the configuration tab > security profile > properties > SSH > Make sure its running. May want to try and restart it from here and see if it begins working. Also check that the firewall is allowing this traffic.

Does the host have a custom firewall rule only allowing SSH from a specific ip???
