The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Question on TTL and round-trip time

Tags: Microsoft, windows, 2003, Ping, Tracert
When we ping a IP, the less round-trip time we get means it's faster. But does it necessary has anything to do with TTL? For example, Bothe host A(202.202.202.1) and host B(210.215.235.221) has the TTL set 128.

I ping host A, the time is 50ms,TTL is 50.
I ping host B, the time is 265ms, TTL is 100.

Is this possible? my question is it doesn't mean less hops guarantee better round-trip time right?

the TTL is just used so that packets don't end up bouncing around the network endlessly. each time a packet goes through a router, the TTL is decremented by one. when it gets to zero it is discarded.

Your statement kind of ture about less hops mean better round trip. TTL like wjester mentioned is TIme to Live. Since both ip's are different so we do not know which route the packet took to get to the system so your time will be different.

my question is simple, I just want to know less hops guarantee better round-trip time ?
Bothe host A(202.202.202.1) and host B(210.215.235.221) has the TTL set 128
I ping host A, the time is 50ms,TTL is 50. -> pass 78 hops
I ping host B, the time is 265ms, TTL is 100. ->pass 28 hops

usually I think it's less hops it's faster. But Is this possible in my example?

there is no guarantee that fewer hops mean a fast trip. you have to take into effect things like latency, bandwidth, etc. I would say that most of the time fewer hops means a faster trip, but not always.

Thank you wjester. If you don't mind... just a question.. what's the difference between latency and round-trip time?

01.22.2008 at 03:35PM PST, ID: 20719543
I suppose latency was such a good word in this case. I think I should have said "network congestion" instead. What I meant to imply that network congestion will effect the round trip time (i.e. a particular router may be busier than another).

Thank you wjester ! I have posted another question here. if you have time, please.
