The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VISTA TCP/IP DNS server entry keeps changing from dhcp assigned to fixed (internal) address

Tags: vista, dns, changing, server
I am using Vista Ultimate. When I work from home I have a local network of 192.168.250.0/24. My wireless router assigns me a dhcp lease including the DNS servers of my ISP. This works fine. However, every so often (couple of hours maybe) the DNS server entry in my Wireless Network Connection TCP/IP properties is being set to a manual address on a different network. The address is  the address of one of the SBS servers in a remote office that I visit from time to time.  My PC is a member of its own workgroup and does not access any resources on the remote network. I use Safenet SoftremoteLT VPN client to connect to remote offices and when the DNS server address has been reset there is a live connection instigated through Softremote to the remote network. If I reset the TCP/IP DNS server address to automatic all is well again. What is capable of making this change? The only thing I can find is that the remote DNS server address appears in the registry key HKLM\System\ControlSet003\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\Interfaces\{D1526EB6-DBF4-4C46-B655-FA122BFFD294} as the Nameserver entry. This is (I think) the LastKnownGood controlset (If I look in HKLM\System\Select).

I am not sure why it would be suddenly changing during a connected session (that is what you are saying, correct?) but perhaps this new capability of Vista TCP/IP has something to do with it:

No joy. You are right - It does change "out of the blue" . I have ferretted through all of the TCP/IP property settings, bot V4 and V6.

I have worked around this problem. The change to the DNS server address only occurs when / if my laptop has established a link to the remote office. I have been  able to change a setting in the softremote VPN client software so that the link to the remote office has to be established manually, rather than automatically as was previously the case. Unless someone has any other good ideas as to what could have been causing the problem I propose to close this question.

I suddenly am experiencing the same type of problem:  The DHCP assigned DNS server name(s) are changing ever 24 hours (all other DHCP settings remain the same.    I checked the DHCP server log: no activity occured (request or lease).  Any chance this has to do with the link-layer topology?  We have our own public IP block (class C) and this net has been working with XP, NT, 2000 and Vista machines for years without problems.  My guess is, a recent update to Vista may be causing this (haven't verified the KB's downloaded yet but will!)

Same issue here but with windows xp clients. Have a linux router that acts also as a dhcp server. This worked fine for the last 3 years or so. In the last couple of days i'm experiencing the same problem on a few machines (windows xp mainly but happened on a windows vista machine also). The dhcp assigned dns server entry is changed to 192.168.0.1 (my network is on 10.0.0.0/24 class) at a random interval (a couple of hours usualy) after the lease has been taken. All the other entry's assigned by dhcp are ok. No aparent activity in the dhcp server logs. This is getting frustrating.

REngimann and Sufleu:   you need to ask your own question instead of "piggybacking" on an already answered question by someone else.  Please see this page in the online Help documentation for Experts Exchange:
