Question

"TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection ---- Winxp can't repair connection"

Asked by: polaatx

Hello, I just connected a new laptop the network at work via cat5. I know the connection is fine but can't browse the internet.

In Network Connections, I see Wireless Network Connection and a "1394 Connection", which says it is connected at 400mbs. But I can't see other computers on the network.

When I click to repair the connection, I get a REPAIR 1394 CONNECTION error saying windows could not finish repairing because TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. But when I go into properties for that connection, I see TCP/Ip item is checked and its settings are exactly same as another laptop that does connect to the internet using the same cat5 wire: obtain IP address automatically, DHCP enabled, etc.

When I try to create a new connection, windows says "your connection should be already working" and won't create a new connection. When I try to delete the 1394 connection, the delete option in the right-click dialog is grayed out.

The connection says it is using 1394 Net Adapter. Driver provided by Microsoft and device mgr says devise is working properly.

Can you help? What should check for?

So - in Device Manager (start, run, type devmgmt.msc <hit enter>) what do you see in the Device list, when you expand "Network Adapters"?
Do you see separate entries for your wireless connection, and your local LAN?

This may be relevant:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298646.

The 1394 connection relates to a type of interconnection called Firewire.  It is not normally used for network connections.  I tend to disable it because it is a security risk, but you can choose to ignore it without any concerns.

So, if you cannot browse the Internet then your "Local Area Connection" network is the one with the problem.  Can you do the following command at a command prompt:

tracert www.google.com

Please post the responses it gives and we can advise.

hI THERE,
I do see two entries under Network Adapters:
1394 Net Adapter
Atheros AR50006EG Wireless Adapter

But I just noticd that under Other Devices, Ethernet Controller has a yellow exclamation mark, as well as video controller and a bunch of other stuff.

(This was a vista machine downgraded to XP Pro. I hunted down drivers from all over the place. No xp drivers provided by Toshiba).

Steve, then basically that means the 1394 Connection might be no connection at all.

But windows won't let me delete it or create new connection.

I need to find driver Ethernet Controller, right? Here we go for another 24 hours of begging and pulling hair to find the darn driver.

by: SteveH_UKPosted on 2008-01-17 at 12:27:23ID: 20685018

So it sounds like you don't have a working driver for the network card.

What model and manufacturer is the laptop and chipset and/or network adapter?

by: and235100Posted on 2008-01-17 at 12:27:36ID: 20685019

You need to uninstall/reinstall the driver - preferably the latest from the manufacturer's website.
If this isn't available for XP - then you are stuck.

You can remove the 1394 connection by disabling the driver in Device Manager.  That's the easy way :)

SteveH, the link you provided does not mention any model numbers. Can it be that ALL Toshiba's use Marvel Yukon Ethernet Controllers? I would think that as very unlikely but strangely there are no mentions of which models that driver applies to. Anyway, I download the driver mentioned and it froze during installation, saying setup was not completed successfully, but won't close the wizard either.

Aftre lunch, I have to find out what make Ethernet Controller I have in my machine. I have Toshiba A135-S4656. The device mgr is clueless supplying no manufacutrer name.

Sorry, have been away from my desk.  Glad you got the right drivers.

Of course, knowing the model means you can find the exact drivers.  My previous suggestion was on the basis that most laptop manufacturers only use a few chipsets.  At the same time, most chipset manufacturers offer drivers that work with multiple chipsets.  Finally, because of the way drivers detect hardware you would be unlikely to get the wrong driver doing any harm, so I felt it was appropriate to offer any link (and this was a Toshiba Vista laptop) where a driver might be found.  You had said that you'd already been looking after all.

Of course, as soon as you'd provided the exact model, and235100 and myself would both find the exact drivers you needed, but that information wasn't available to me when I posted last.

Thanks for the assist points and I'm glad it's sorted for you.

I'd still recommend disabling the 1394 device unless you intend to use it!
