The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Ping issues with dual NIC's in Windows Server - Data sometimes will not make it back to client computers

I have 10 servers. All of the Servers run either Windows 2000 or 2003. The servers have dual NIC's in them.

We are utilizing the second NIC in each server to connect to a separate switch on the network that is totally isolated from the normal client traffic. The second NIC's are also on a different subnet. form the primary NIC. We are doing this so that the servers can have a dedicated pipe to our disk-based backup solution. When the disk-based backup was on the primary LAN, we were seeing big bandwidth issues. Especially with our VoIP phone system.

Now that the second NIC's are on the separate LAN, we are running into an issue where clients at random will not be able to hit our servers. For example, a client launched Outlook, and Outlook eventually says "No server available". When we ping the Exchange Server, the DNS responds back with the proper IP on the primary LAN, but the Ping's time out.

In the NIC configuration, I made sure not to set a gateway or register with DSN on the second NIC.

What am I missing here? It seems like traffic makes it to the servers, but the servers try to send the packets back on the second NIC.Start Free Trial
