easy script to verify IP connection.

Hi,
I'm looking for something an end user could run easily to verify if their connection to the internet is up, and show the result in a very simple way, as opposed to ping results showing all those numbers that confuse the user.  If it could ping/check their default gw, dns server and maybe google and then show the results in a thumbs up or down display, that would be perfect.  
I'm open to any ideas, appreciate all the help.
