Is there a way to browse a workgroup with the NetBIOS over TCP/IP setting disabled ?
Persons are able to access the file server in the Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain, but the said server also needs to be able to access a NAS unit that cannot be joined to the domain.
It currently is a member of a workgroup that has same name as my domain name p.s. I have changed the workgroup name as well.
Now, if I disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP via Advanced Settings & WINS of the network card, it is not able to browse as I get the error \\xxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission &... If I enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP then I can browse the NAS without a problem.
I need to get rid of NetBIOS and have everything go via DNS. The 2003 servers or XP clients can resolve the name of the NAS, ping it, as well as administer it with NetBIOS turned off. Unfortunately though, they just cannot browse the shares.
Surely, there is some workaround / method to allow this to happen with NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled.
Many thanks.
