Browse All TopicsHi there,
I have an odd one.
I have one Laptop on a network of over 100 which is seeing problems with network connectivity. I suspect is keeping dropping connection causing applications to bomb out.
During trouble shooting, it quickly became clear that something is a miss.
I cannot ping this machine, I cannot contact is in anyway. It's like it's not on the network. But it is! The machine in question can ping others as normal.
Firewall is off, no anti virus (ie. Norton) is blocking anything.
I've reset TCP/IP, but alas no difference.
The laptop works fine in as much as it can access the internet, email, other apps relying on a network connection.
Anyone out there got any ideas?

Although the firewall is OFF, you still have to specify permitted ICMP packets.
Control-Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced -> Settings on the ICMP section, and check the desired type of ICMP packets.
on the Advanced Window, you might also want to do it on a NIC basis, select the Interface you are connecting with, click the Settings button next to it, go to the ICMP tab, and select echo requests.
For some reason, these are not enabled even if the firewall is OFF. You have to do it manually (at least on my windows xp)
yank the nic out the machine, and reset the TCPIP stack. Reboot, and reinstall with new drivers....
Also...
netsh int ip reset reset.log (assuming this is the one you did)
netsh winsock reset
netsh firewall reset
netsh int ip delete arpcache
We see this quite often, and doing a total rebuild of the connection usually resolves it......

How do you try to pong the machine - by IP address or by name. Please, try both ways.
