Just trying to work out what you are asking here.  So youhave

PC
Laptop
Phone

Wifi router

And the PC can do:

ping www.google.co.uk
telnet b.mx.mail.yahoo.com 25 (control ] then q then return and Y to exit)
telnet www.google.co.uk 80   Press Enter a couple of times, should see some html text come back

If these work then you have working tcpip and DNS.

ftp ftp.microsoft.com

If you can connect to that press return at the username and QUIT to exit FTP.

So that leaves you browser.  What happens when you use it (presumably we are talking Internet Explorer here?).

Could it be you somehow have a proxy server set (tools internet options, or it is set to automatic - turn that off).

Can you download firefox say on another machine and install that to try?

Let us know how you go with that lot for starters.

Steve

Hi Steve
Sorry for the delay in reply , was out of town.
yes I have
PC
Laptop
Phone

Wifi router

And the PC can do:

ping www.google.co.uk
ping the ISP DNS
ping the WiFi router
resolve host names to Ips adn vice versa
tracert www.google.co.uk
obtain Ip and Dns from DHCP

But PC cannot:
telnet to any site or even the router, just says connected and no login prompt appears.
ftp to any site, just says connected and no login prompt appears

laptop and phone can do all of the above .( laptop connected via WiFi or lan cable)

The browser is IE 6 ( 128 bit ). When trying to access any site it just says " Opening http://www.google.co.uk" but nothing happens and after a while " Internet Explorer cannot display " msg. appears. Checked all the settings, automatically detect settings is off, no proxy is set. I have also tried using IE 7,IE8,Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Netscape but same result.
Did asuccessful winsock reset as well. No change.
Tried with static Ip on the PC as well but to no avail.
PC Config:
Compaq Cq2000IL
Intel Atom  1.6 GHZ
1 GB Ram
Realtek RTL8139/810x family NIC
WInXP SP2 version 2002
Please find attached the results of ipconfig /all for the PC.

Thanks in advance

Thanks, sorry for the basic suggestions to start with, was going to suggest reset winsock next too - can't be sue what level someone is asking about.

Bit confused as that has two ipconfig's in it - for the same pc and adaptor but one with gateway of 192.168.1.159 and IP of 192.168.1.160 and one of 192.168.1.1 / 192.168.1.2 from presumably a static setting and dhcp from router?

In any case though it seems TCP/IP stack is working but nothing is getting returned.... if you can't even connect to the admin pages on your router then there is something pretty bizarre going on.

Curious, if nslookups work?

nslookup
www.google.co.uk.
exit

It's strange that ping etc. work as clearly the network card and tcp/ip stack is working to be able to send and receive packets ok.  Does it respond to ping's from other pc's, can you do a telnet to a port showing as listening in netstat -an, e.g. 445 from another machine -- i.e. telnet 192.168.1.2 445 - if you get a blank screen with cursor that move down with Return looks good...

Can you try it in safe mode with networking boot of XP perhaps which would help rule out firewall type issues - have you got any firewall software on there aside from the built in? -- Output of NET START, tasklist, netstat -an, netstat -e would give an idea for starters

Cheers,

Hi Steve,
The reasons for the different IPs is that I changed the router IP from default ( 192.168.1.1) to 192.168.1.159 ( on suggestion of ISP Helpdesk). I  am able to browse using both of the above settings from laptop and PC is still NO GO!. I have now changed the router IP back to default. I am able to telnet to port 139 and after connecting I get a blank screen with cursor moving down with Return . I am also able to ping the PC from the laptop and vice versa. Connecting from safe Mode with Networking enabled is also a NO GO. I dont have any other firewalls installed other than the built in ones and have tried with it off from the PC as well but still no change. The outputs of the various commands that you asked for are attached.

Thanks again

Looking back through you said you did a WINSOCK reset, did you do a TCPIP one though, thought I'd seen that but looking back can't now?

If not give it a try at least:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

IP works (ping), but apparently TCP has problems. You could check some other applications:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers

Maybe one of your drivers is damaged. Can you try to reinstall your drivers?

by: eatmeimadanishPosted on 2009-09-14 at 09:16:12ID: 25326945

My hunch is you have a proxy (could be spyware) loaded or masking your http connection.  You can usually detect these using up to date spyware and antivirus mechanisms, but usually these will only get rid of the root cause and not repair the damage.  Two things you can do:
1) run SFC /SCANNOW to repair DLL files in windows
2) repair the registry by following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986

I have encountered this before, and its usually faster to just reinstall the OS froms scratch then to fight with the stupid task of finding and repairing this issue.

HI All,

Sorry for the delay in reply. I have found a workaround for my problem. I just bought a USN Lan card and it is working now without any of the proposed solutions. I feel that there is something wrong with the onborad lan port. If it is working fine on every other Lan port except for the onboard PC port then by process of elimination I strongly feel that the fault is with the on board port. I did do a fresh install and a TCP reset as well but nothing worked. Connecting via the on board PC LAN port is still not working but it is working via the USB LAN port. I called Compaq technical support but they are convinced that the onboard LAN port is working fine since ping is working so had a shouting match with them and gave up. Since the USB LAN card is working and I am finally able to browse form my PC I will not take any more of your valuable time and thank you all for all your time and energy spent on this issue.
Thank you Steve and sorry to have bothered you with what ultimately lookes like a waste of your time.
It was just a bad LAN port I guess.

Sounds odd, but not impossible.  Could be the settings in properties of the network card for auto-detect is working right with your switch -- maybe had to turn off flow control checking etc.

As you have it working I guess we'll leave it at that.

And why can't it have been a driver problem?
