Question

Can not ping ip address

Asked by: rbonds

Hello-

I have 1 xp pro laptop on my network that I cannot ping from any computer not even the domain controller can ping this 1 laptop. However, the laptop can access the internet and network shares, printers, can ping other computers, etc....

No firewall is turned on. When you log into our domain it automatically turns the MS Windows Firewall off. We do have symantec pc anywhere, symantec antivirus 10, and cisco vpn client installed on all laptops.

I'm not sure what it can be. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I uninstall tcpip connection then reinstall it will that fix anything?

Thanks

It sounds to me like it used to have some firewall software installed and it did not get cleanly uninstalled.

Did it used to have something installed?

I had a few Norton 360 pc's that had the software removed and no internet access afterwards.  I used a tool to forcibly remove it and bingo - internet back again.

Did you verify that the MS firewall is actually off?

by: MCSolutions03Posted on 2009-09-10 at 13:43:24ID: 25304111

I would try disabling the antivirus software, I have had symantec software block simple things like a ping before.

On the laptop that is unpingable, goto Start>Run, then enter "cmd" and click OK.  This will drop you to a virtual dos window, type ipconfig and verify the ip address that you are pinging.  Try to ping the other machines with this laptop, this will give us insight into why you can't reach it from the other computers.  Does the network use static or dynamic ip addreses?

Hello,

as long as the Cisco VPN client is not connected i don't think that it should interrupt anything, however, you could uncheck the box from the Deterministic network enhancer on the Local Area Connection as it used to cause problems specially when the network supports authentication.

Also, are you sure that no firewall is activated, maybe you have another application that is controlling your traffic, some antivirus solutions does such thing, and make sure that the windows firewall is stopped from the services.msc console, dont trust the OFF option in the windows firewall control panel.

Hope this helps,

Thanks!

SAV 10 does not have any firewall functionality.  As everyone is indicating, it is likely that some firewall is running.  I find it a little unusual to have a domain policy to disable the firewall.

Thanks for the responses. The firewall is off in Windows and is greyed out so you cannot change it. I also disabled  windows firewall\ICS in the services.msc, No other firewall was ever installed.

thanks

Are you sure nothing was ever installed - even from the factory?

How old is the laptop?

Most laptops within the past few years have some internet security package installed as standard.

You can try.

Click on Start, Run {type} cmd {press enter}

type:

netsh winsock reset {press enter}

Reboot the laptop and see what happens.

Sorry about that the user had to run out and unfortunately I discovered this issue late in the day. Hope to receive the same amount of help tomorrow to help resolve this issue. By the way, before the user left I got to run that command from a dos prompt: netsh winsock reset, but never got to see the outcome.

Thanks again.

Sounds terribly familiar!

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 07:34:15ID: 25309898

Good morning everyone, none of those options are working. I even tried giving the user a static address and still cannot ping. However, I did a tracert and her ip address came up as another laptop name. I then looked into dns and saw that in the reverse zone lookup and deleted that machine name but still no success. Next, I tried assigning her a static IP address and still was unable to ping successfully.

thanks

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 07:40:26ID: 25309976

Ok so lets just establish what it happening here:

The laptop has a connection to the network and it works fine.
The laptop cannot ping anyone, nor can anyone ping her.
You have tried using a static and a dynamic IP address.
All antivirus and firewall program have been turned off, even in the services tab.
You have verified that the laptop is on the same subnet as everyone else right? 255.255.255.0 is standard.
There are no administrative limiters on the system that would say for example block ping.exe correct?

Are all the above correctly describing the issue?

Also let me ask just to refocus this discussion, aside from the ability to ping the laptop, what else isn't working, I mean for what reason do u need to be able to ping it?

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 07:43:24ID: 25310018

Also double check this on the laptop.

1. Open Properties of Local Area Connection
2. Click Advanced, Settings, Advanced
3. ICMP Settings
4. Enable 'Allow incoming echo request'

by: houssam_balloutPosted on 2009-09-11 at 07:44:04ID: 25310020

The windows XP SP2 firewall does not allow icmp request (by default )

Go into the advanced tab in windows firewall, click on the settings tab in the icmp box and allow incoming echo request. Do this on both computers and that should work

Also, do those computers had same mac address (may you had clone a one)

We will get this figured out today =) Remember who suggested the ICMP =P

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 08:27:04ID: 25310521

Her computer can ping out but no one can ping her computer.
I gave her a static ip address and still can not ping the static address

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 08:30:25ID: 25310550

Did u use the above suggestions yet from this morning?

by: MCSolutions03Posted on 2009-09-11 at 08:32:01ID: 25310560

can her computer ping the loopback? 127.0.0.1

by: MCSolutions03Posted on 2009-09-11 at 08:41:25ID: 25310649

is this computer wireless or wired?

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:22:52ID: 25311039

I tried the suggestions from earlier this morning.

She can ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1)

Her computer has wireless capabilities and is wired on the LAN, so she actually has 2 ip addresses that are unpingable.

However, I tried tracert and her addresses (wireless and wired) came up as another machine name that's on the network. I then went into the dc and looked at the dns and discovered that the reversed dns zone had a different machine name for the laptop address that the user has. I then deleted those entries and performed a dns flush on the problematic laptop and still nothing.

sorry to respond so late.

thanks

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:27:24ID: 25311097

Ok so you verified the subnet as well...and what was the need for being able to ping other than the ability to ping?  As the tree said to the lumberjack...im stumped...ill have to think about this.....

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:27:57ID: 25311108

and you are obviously not trying to use both connections at the same time right?

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:31:57ID: 25311143

I believe it was a remote connection issue that I was having, then discovered I couldn't ping the users laptop. That's how I stumpled upon this issue.

Both wireless and wired connections are going and they both have IP addresses.

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:32:59ID: 25311154

The subnet is the same. She's receiving addresses from the dhcp server

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:33:51ID: 25311160

Whoa, try disconnecting one of the connections and trying the above suggestions, in my experience running two like that can be problematic.

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:45:03ID: 25311252

Just the wireless going and I tried to ping the wireless address, still nothing InfraLED.

by: samieranaPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:47:09ID: 25311273

I think your both connections have same Default Gateway. Try to assign one static IP address without gateway and other with gateway(which it can get from DHCP server).
And check if you are can assign some other ip address from any other computer(but disconnect the other one first).

by: InfraLEDPosted on 2009-09-11 at 09:49:14ID: 25311299

and vice versa too? wireless off, wired on, static and dynamic tried?

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 10:32:46ID: 25311691

I figured out what the problem was: Within services.msc, I stopped Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN service and then tried to ping her laptop and got replies back.

by: MCSolutions03Posted on 2009-09-11 at 10:44:49ID: 25311793

Good job! Now you just need to find out how to make the VPN client not mess with your communications when you're not tunneling.

by: rbondsPosted on 2009-09-11 at 11:27:07ID: 25312161

Correct....I will still divide the points up just give me a little while. Working on a users email issue.

Thanks for your help everyone.
