I have 1 xp pro laptop on my network that I cannot ping from any computer not even the domain controller can ping this 1 laptop. However, the laptop can access the internet and network shares, printers, can ping other computers, etc....
No firewall is turned on. When you log into our domain it automatically turns the MS Windows Firewall off. We do have symantec pc anywhere, symantec antivirus 10, and cisco vpn client installed on all laptops.
I'm not sure what it can be. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I uninstall tcpip connection then reinstall it will that fix anything?
Thanks

On the laptop that is unpingable, goto Start>Run, then enter "cmd" and click OK. This will drop you to a virtual dos window, type ipconfig and verify the ip address that you are pinging. Try to ping the other machines with this laptop, this will give us insight into why you can't reach it from the other computers. Does the network use static or dynamic ip addreses?
Hello,
as long as the Cisco VPN client is not connected i don't think that it should interrupt anything, however, you could uncheck the box from the Deterministic network enhancer on the Local Area Connection as it used to cause problems specially when the network supports authentication.
Also, are you sure that no firewall is activated, maybe you have another application that is controlling your traffic, some antivirus solutions does such thing, and make sure that the windows firewall is stopped from the services.msc console, dont trust the OFF option in the windows firewall control panel.
Hope this helps,
Thanks!
Sorry about that the user had to run out and unfortunately I discovered this issue late in the day. Hope to receive the same amount of help tomorrow to help resolve this issue. By the way, before the user left I got to run that command from a dos prompt: netsh winsock reset, but never got to see the outcome.
Thanks again.
Good morning everyone, none of those options are working. I even tried giving the user a static address and still cannot ping. However, I did a tracert and her ip address came up as another laptop name. I then looked into dns and saw that in the reverse zone lookup and deleted that machine name but still no success. Next, I tried assigning her a static IP address and still was unable to ping successfully.
thanks
Ok so lets just establish what it happening here:
The laptop has a connection to the network and it works fine.
The laptop cannot ping anyone, nor can anyone ping her.
You have tried using a static and a dynamic IP address.
All antivirus and firewall program have been turned off, even in the services tab.
You have verified that the laptop is on the same subnet as everyone else right? 255.255.255.0 is standard.
There are no administrative limiters on the system that would say for example block ping.exe correct?
Are all the above correctly describing the issue?
Also let me ask just to refocus this discussion, aside from the ability to ping the laptop, what else isn't working, I mean for what reason do u need to be able to ping it?
The windows XP SP2 firewall does not allow icmp request (by default )
Go into the advanced tab in windows firewall, click on the settings tab in the icmp box and allow incoming echo request. Do this on both computers and that should work
Also, do those computers had same mac address (may you had clone a one)
Also:
Check your Services are Started:
(go to control panel, administrative tools?>services)
COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Windows Zero Configuration (wireless configurations)
Workstation
I tried the suggestions from earlier this morning.
She can ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1)
Her computer has wireless capabilities and is wired on the LAN, so she actually has 2 ip addresses that are unpingable.
However, I tried tracert and her addresses (wireless and wired) came up as another machine name that's on the network. I then went into the dc and looked at the dns and discovered that the reversed dns zone had a different machine name for the laptop address that the user has. I then deleted those entries and performed a dns flush on the problematic laptop and still nothing.
sorry to respond so late.
thanks

It sounds to me like it used to have some firewall software installed and it did not get cleanly uninstalled.
Did it used to have something installed?
I had a few Norton 360 pc's that had the software removed and no internet access afterwards. I used a tool to forcibly remove it and bingo - internet back again.
