The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

"No network provider accepted the given network path" when browsing server

Tags: provider, accepted, given, path
I have an XP Pro laptop connecting to a server with Small Biz Server 2003.  I can browse the server via IP address but not by host name.  The error message I am receiving is "No network provider accepted the given network path".  I can browse any other computer in the network by host name but not the server.  I CAN ping the server by host name and it resolves just fine.  It is only when I try to browse it.  I can join the laptop to the domain and perform several other functions related to DNS.  I can browse the web as well without problems.  This is the only computer on the network that is experiencing this problem.  It happens regardless of which user is logged onto the computer.  I have researched this issue thoroughly on this site as well as Google but have had no luck so far.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have tried everything that page suggests to no avail.  Thanks anyway.

06.11.2007 at 03:41PM PDT, ID: 19262452
hmmm that seems very strange, try a tracert hostname to make sure its going to the right place...

Do you have the Windows XP firewall (or any firewall software) turned on - if so then perhaps you should try disabling the firewall.

Also are you using DHCP or a static IP on the XP client?

06.11.2007 at 07:18PM PDT, ID: 19263238
Windows Firewall is installed - have tried turning it off, but no luck.  The client computer is receiving DHCP from the 2003 server that it is unable to browse.

06.11.2007 at 07:22PM PDT, ID: 19263245
could you please do a tracert or ping to confirm the server IP is as expected? then do an ipconfig /all and specifically look at your DNS and WINS server addresses. Also can you ping the FQDN of the server?

06.11.2007 at 07:25PM PDT, ID: 19263254
When you said "Windows Firewall is installed - have tried turning it off, but no luck" do you mean you can't disable the firewall? or you have disabled the firewall but you still can't browse to the server?

Re: When you said "Windows Firewall is installed - have tried turning it off, but no luck" do you mean you can't disable the firewall? or you have disabled the firewall but you still can't browse to the server?

Sorry - I meant that I have turned it off but it did not resolve the issue.

RE: could you please do a tracert or ping to confirm the server IP is as expected? then do an ipconfig /all and specifically look at your DNS and WINS server addresses. Also can you ping the FQDN of the server?

It is resolving the correct IP of the server.  DNS and WINS are both set as the server which is correct.  This is such a strange problem as at first I thought it was DNS or WINS but I can ping the server or any other client computer with correct resolution.  I have almost decided it will be quicker at this point to reload Windows than to continue fighting this issue.  I have NEVER had an issue like this that was so difficult to resolve.  The strangest thing is the error message - no suggestion I have found for that particular error has resolved the problem.

06.11.2007 at 07:33PM PDT, ID: 19263289
can you browse the fqdn or just the ip?

06.11.2007 at 07:34PM PDT, ID: 19263291
One other thing I can suggest is that in the Advanced TCP/IP settings make sure that "Append primary and connection specific suffixes is selected" - not sure if this will resolve your problem but may be worth a try,

\\hostname gives the "No network provider accepted the given network path" error.

\\fqdn gives an other error which I can't recall right now (laptop is at my office).  I think it was a "path not found" error.

\\serverip browses server correctly.

06.11.2007 at 07:39PM PDT, ID: 19263314
I think I checked the append suffixes setting but will double check tomorrow when I am back in front of the PC.

does the machine have more than 1 nic? ie wireless and wired?

06.11.2007 at 07:44PM PDT, ID: 19263332
RE: does the machine have more than 1 nic? ie wireless and wired?

Yes, wired and wireless - same behavior on both.

06.12.2007 at 12:23AM PDT, ID: 19264158
when you tried, are both conenctions enabled?
if so, try it with 1 disabled 1 enabled and then switch em around.

Is the sbs the only server in the network?
can you find & browse the server if you go through
Entire Network -> MS Windows Network -> Youre domain name -> Server?

Check the eventlog of that server for any masterbrowser errors

06.12.2007 at 12:47PM PDT, ID: 19269237
Check the Following things,

Make sure you have enabled File and Print Sharing For Microsoft Networks From Properties of Local Area Connection & also check client for microsoft network is enabled

Make sure the Workstation service is running on the local computer while Server service is running on the remote computer

Please check whether you enabled netBIOS over TCP/IP in Network connections > Properties > TCPI/ip> properties>advanced > wins> click on enable NetBIOS over tcpip

Change the Security Policy - Network security: LAN Manager authentication level: Send LM & NTLM responses.

It really would be much simpler and a lot faster if you'd post a COMPLETE ipconfig /all from both the server and the workstatin for us to take a look at.

Is the TCP/IP Netbios Helper service started?

Description of Service - Enables support for NetBIOS over TCP/IP service and NetBIOS name resolution.

06.15.2007 at 02:29AM PDT, ID: 19290235
As I see it, this issue has something to do with name resolution.  What values are you getting when you run nslookup (hostname)?  If it doe'sn't resolve to an IP address, then check the DNS settings on your server.
