The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problems View Company Website Externally

Tags: Microsoft, IIS, Windows Server 2003
Hello

I have an internal website that can be accessed fine by going to http://localhost/site, if i go to http://localhost then i get the page is under construction page. I am happy this is working.  When i try to access this site from external, ie not on my network, if i go to http://mysite.com then i get the page under construction site, if i go to http://mysite.com/site then i get page does not exist errror message. HTTP 404 error.

I am happy that the way that IIS has been installed is the same as i have done before, and that the firewall will have the correct ports open as i have another IIS server on the network that is working externally fine. NAT translation is setup for this IIS server the same as the extra one i have.

Im thinking this is a permissions error.

Any ideas?????

Many thanks

Gareth Collins

Hi,

your site correct pointing the server IP address or IP address in which you have configure your site in the IIS. You can check it through the following step.

go to run>cmd> type

ping sitename

it is pinging or not and the IP address is same as you have configure for your site.

02.25.2008 at 01:48AM PST, ID: 20973945
Hello

When pinging i get it resolving the external IP address that has been assigned for this site.  Within IIS we are just using the default IP address. Could this be where the problem is?

Thanks

Hi,

If it correct resolve then please check the Iuser permission on the website folder. The IUSER will be same as you have specify in the IIS>website>site>properites>security >edit>anonomous user .

02.25.2008 at 01:59AM PST, ID: 20974008
Hello

The IUSR account has been granted DENY write and special permissions on the default web site and on the virtual site the permissions are ALLOW Read and Execute, List folder contents and Read

Thanks

IP address , port of the website 80 and hostheader menas domain fulll name.

Please also check your website is working fine through the IP address.

Would i be putting in the internal IP or external IP?

The website is working fine internally

Thanks

Hi,

The IP should be external not internal.. means if you are use internel IP then site can't be access by external network.

192.168.xxx is internal IP address.

After putting in the external IP address in the properties of the Default Website this did not give me anything.

I am still getting the page can not be found 404 error.

Thanks

Hi,

Are you able to access site thorugh the IP address ?

Please also check to disable friendly error in the IE.
IE>tools>advanced tool> uncheck friendly error option and save so you will get exact error message and update me.

Hello

After changing the IE settings i am still getting the exact same error

The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

Make sure that the Web site address displayed in the address bar of your browser is spelled and formatted correctly.
If you reached this page by clicking a link, contact the Web site administrator to alert them that the link is incorrectly formatted.

HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 404.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled Web Site Setup, Common Administrative Tasks, and About Custom Error Messages.

I get the same error when i use the IP address or the website name.

I know that the correct ports are open as i can telnet to the external IP address on port 80.

Also another IIS instance is running within my domain and i can connect to those sites fine.  They are running on my exchange server and this instance is running on a dedicated Web server.

Hope this helps

Gareth

Hi,

Are you sure that the webpage which you are accessing is there ?

Please also check the home directory of your website  is correct.

Please also upload another test page and try to access them, it is working ?

02.25.2008 at 03:39AM PST, ID: 20974389
Hello

I am happy that the site is there and working, if i go to http://localhost/sitename then i get the website.  If i go to another computer on the domain and do http://websitename/sitename then i get the correct website.

Its when i go to external is the problem.  We have set the external IP address for this site using NAT addressing on the firewall and when i test this externally by pinging the website, it is returning the websites IP address (external)

I can telnet on port 80 to this external ip address also

Im thinking that this is either a permissions error or a conflict between 2 IIS servers on the same domain.  Like i mentioned i have antoher instance of IIS running on my exchange server for OMA and OWA etc. This second instance is a dedicated web server for another site.

Any other troubleshooting i can try?

Thanks for your time on this

Hi,

If it is working internal then may be problem through your firewall or somethning like you said.

You can just try tracert that your request properly got to your server or not

start >run >cmd

tracert domain name  then enter

It will give you the full access path so please send me the result.

Hi,

Can you configure the site separate instead of the default website becuase it is look like the website configuration problem in the IIS.

How do you mean seperate? I already have it running as a virtual site within the default web site.

Thanks

Gareth

02.25.2008 at 07:14AM PST, ID: 20976052
I am not sure why you are troubleshooting IIS if it works from multiple machines internally and you do not have any "IP Address and Domain Name Restrictions" in place.  Your problem should be revolving around your NAT settings.  If port 80 is redirecting to your OWA server only, then it won't be able to return the site from the new server or some simliar scenario.  I would suggest posting the model of your router and any pertinent config information if you can't find the problem there in the hopes someone familier with that equipment can see something config'd wrong.  Cheers.

hi mcconmw,

But if the config is wrong how can i telnet to the site?

Gareth

02.25.2008 at 08:27AM PST, ID: 20976843
Are you sure that you are in fact connecting to the correct web server?  If NAT is setup wrong the OWA server could be answering requests for port 80.  Bottom line, the culprit is much more likely to be in your edge configuration than the web server configuration based on what you have written.

02.25.2008 at 09:02AM PST, ID: 20977153
OK

I will stop the OMA server from running IIS to test this..

Thanks

02.25.2008 at 09:15AM PST, ID: 20977247
OK some progress i think..

I stopped IIS from running on my Exchange server, then tried my site again http://mysite.com/sitename i still got nothing, but i tried http://mysite.com and i no longer got the "under construction" page

I then restarted IIS on the mailserver and once again i got the under construction page....

So it would seem that traffic externally is not getting to my second IIS server, is that right?

Let me know what you think

Gareth

02.25.2008 at 09:20AM PST, ID: 20977282
That seems pretty point on based on your test.  What kind of router do you have doing your NAT for you?

I am not familiar with the SonicWall appliance in particular.  You face a couple of different issues here and what the best solution will be depends on the capabilities of the SonicWall.  At a rudimentary level you are wanting to direct traffic from the same IP address (external address) and port to two different servers.  This obviously isn't going to work at layer 3\4.  The appliance would need to be aware of what address was used to refer to the external ip address to route the traffic correctly.  If the appliance is unable to do this some other options would be to host the site on another port and continue simple port redirection to your other server.  You could set up a proxy inside the network to do the serving as well.  I would suggest posting a question to the tune of "how do I setup two different IIS servers behind a SonicWall" in one of the communication forums in the hopes of finding someone that knows the config off the top of their heads.  The other option is to call SonicWall support and ask them if you have support.  It seems pretty clear at this point that the issue is not a Windows\Configuration issue.  Cheers.

i appriciate all the guidance..  I now need to figure the rest of it out.  Like i mentioned the sites / servers are configured with different external ip addresses, its just figuring out why the second server is not getting seen.  I think you might be right with the ports.  As i have 2 sites running on port 80.

will have to try this and get back.  Can anyone advise me on how to dish out the points as i think i have been helped.. not necessarly answered but i would not ber here at this point with out the help

Thanks to you all

Gareth
