The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Static IP settings revert to DHCP on windows 2003 server with 2 NICs

Subject says it all, we have a server running windows server 2003 X64 that has a static IP. It has 2 NICs and up until today one of them was disabled. I enable the 2nd NIC and gave both NICs static IPs. If I choose status it shows them as manually configured, but if I open the TCI/IP properties up again it shows it as DHCP, when I run netconfig /all it shows NIC 1 as DHCP enabled but NIC 2 as static, despite the fact that when I open the properties if TCP/IP on NIC 2 it too shows it as DHCP.

I've very lost here and have no clue why this is happening. The only thing that changed was enabling the second NIC.

Any ideas would be a life saver.

Would it happen to be a Dell server? What kind of NICs are they?

03.19.2008 at 09:51AM PDT, ID: 21163319
Two NICs cannot have same ip address unless they are teamed.

Try removing the IP from the first nic,(or give it a diff ip), then disable it, enable the second nic and then give it the static ip. should work fine. Are you getting any messages while applying static ip? if yes post them please...

Yes it is a dell server. Blade server to be exact. PowerEdge 1955.

itsmein - Give me a little bit of credit here boss. 2 NICs, 2 different IPs, 1 gateway. No error messages.

Update - I deleted the registry keys that house the NIC settings and ran "netsh int ip reset" which is supposed to reset tcp/ip and overwrite any registry keys that store the NICs configs, it did nothing. I had to import the deleted keys back into the registry again to have any kind of network activity at all.

My temporary solution so far has been to manually disable DHCP in those registry keys for both NICs and set the static IP there. So now when I reboot both NICs keep their static IP and "netconfig /all" shows the correct IPs and that they are static and DHCP is disabled but when you open the GUI for TCP/IP under the NIC's property page it still shows both listed as DHCP.

So it seems something is jacking up my GUI settings but the registry keys are good and hold during a reboot. I still need to figure out what in the world is causing this.

techno - the NICs are named Broadcom BCM57085S NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

I believe they used to be teamed a long time ago, I wonder if that's my issue here.

When this server was set up did you use the Dell Server set up CD or did you just install windows directly? Not sure if it is related but I had a similar problem on a Poweredge server where windows was installed directly without using Dell's bootable server configuration CD. I would configure a static IP on the NIC and it would take the IP but when I did ipconfig /all it said it was configured with DHCP and when I went back into tcp/ip properties it was set for DHCP. It wouldn't stay set to static although it did maintain the static IP I set on it until reboot at which point it would pick up a DHCP address.

Your problem may or may not be related to this but the solution was to download the appropriate NIC drivers from Dell, uninstall and reinstall the NICs with the downloaded drivers.

My problem was also with the Broadcom NetXtreme II nics. I bet if you reinstall them with the latest drivers from Dell it fixes your problem.

Excellent techno-wiz,
I think the server came with Windows preinstalled. But it was about a year ago so I don't remember. With only 1 NIC enabled it's been fine up to this point. I'll have some time this weekend to reboot it but now that it's up my boss would kill me if I downed it again.
I'll give that a try this weekend when we can afford some server downtime, in the meantime I just hope we don't need to reboot.

Haven't had a chance to fix it yet but after some more research I'm certain techno is right.

I've been experiencing the exact same problem. I've tried downloading the latest Broadcom Management App package from Dell, uninstalled, re-installed and nothing. It always reverts to this weird behaviour and i'm going crazy over this. Additionally I have an Intel NIC on the server which is configured for backup, and when I reboot the server the network settings for that NIC disappear. Arrgh!
Any other ideas?

I had the exact same problem. I contacted Dell Silver Support Team and got this response:

"Broadcom NetXtreme II devices have a driver that is intended only for Remote Installation Services (RIS) text mode use and WinPE environments. This driver does not perform well and is not intended for a fully installed Windows® operating system.
In some cases, installing this RIS-only driver in the fully installed operating system may lead to some issues:

Additional ?ghost? NetXtreme II devices in Broadcom Advanced Controller Suite (BACS) Inability to assign a static IP address to a NetXtreme II device or NetXtreme II adapters Adapters that are supposed to have a static IP address obtaining Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) addresses The Broadcom InstallShield Installer does not remove the inf entry or reg entry for the RIS driver created device. The failure to remove this ?ghost? adapter?s entries in the operating system creates conflicting information about NetXtreme II Network Interface Card (NICs).

To check for this condition:

On the Network Properties page, right-click a NetXtreme II adapter and configure the TCP/IP entry for that device.

Set a static IP address.

Click OK twice to apply the address to the adapter.

Open the device properties again, select TCP/IP and check the static condition versus the dynamic condition.

A system that is experiencing the issue reverts to DHCP and does not maintain the static IP assigned earlier.

Perform the following steps to fix this issue.
Uninstall all of the Broadcom NetXtreme II adapters from the system.

 Note:
Use the Add/Remove Programs applet of the Control Panel.

If the VBD and NDIS Client drivers were installed automatically,  uninstall all of the devices manual one at a time, both the Network Device entries containing the text 5708 in the title as well as the System Devices containing 5708 in their title via the Device Manager.

Reboot the system.

Remove any Ethernet Adapter Entries in the network device area of the device manager.

 Note:
Devices titled Ethernet Adapter are the incorrect devices installed with the RIS driver.

Reboot the system again.

I hope this will be of help and resolves your issue.

Bcom_LAN_11.0_4.1_W2K3_A02.exe

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads"

I followed these steps and the problem was resolved. Phew!
