Laptop can not access shared resources

Asked by AdminAssociates in Internet Protocols, Windows XP Operating System, PC Laptops

Tags: XP Pro SP2, Wireless access to resources

I have a client who just bought a new Dell laptop with XP Pro SP2 installed. It has Built-in b/g/n wireless.  They do not have a true server but use an old XP machine in a file server role. With no DC they obviously have a workgroup.
I have set the laptop up in the same workgroup, carefully checking the spelling... it is  theirname_net.
The guy has a account on the "server" with the same credentials as for the laptop. Everyone else can access the files, as he can from his old desktop.
The laptop connects to the wireless Belkin N-Draft router with no problem and has quite quick Internet access. The router is performing the DHCP server service so the IP address is in the correct subnet.
The problem is, he can not see the workgroup resources and no one else can see him.  Pinging using name and IP both work in both directions.
as I said, their workgroup is like theirname_net (underscore).  That is what I have entered on his computer.  When I do an ipconfig /all I see "connect-specific DNS suffix" is theirname-net ( dash, not underscore).  Is this directly related to my problem, and any ideas what I can do to resolve this?

Hi,
Maybe you should just use a simple name for the workgroup to start with ... but your problem might not come from there.
Have you got an antivirus or firewall on the computer? That might be helping the machine accessing the shares on the networks. Wheck also the rules on the windows firewall if it is used.
so make sure your firewall is properly configured. First test is to disable all security options on the laptop (antivirus and firewall, ...) and try again.

Thank you dlan75 for your response.  Actually I already did try after disabling the firewall, but not the AV.  I will try that Monday morning, however I have never seen this being a problem before.

Hi,
Well might not be a problem but if you have correctly set up the account on both machines, then it should work.
Something else you can look is how you make your sharing. If it is a simple sharing or normal sharing. Use the normal mode is recommended. Then make shure on your shares that the accound is authorized AND in the security options as well.
The problem you have is either that you are blocked by an Antivirus or a rights management problem.

It sounds like your netbeui data is not getting across the router.
Try using \\192.168.(ip address of "server") from the laptop.

If this works, but \\servername doesn't, you can add the file to hosts.  If not, respond here.

Hi,
Hum ... Netbeui is not used anymore and that for quite some time now ... this protocol isn't even present anymore on windows XP so I guess that this isn't the problem.

Check that the time *and* time-zone matches between the old and the new computer - correct to within a few minutes. This is certainly important on a domain machine because of the kerberos packet timestamps needing to be within a certain tolerance to prevent them being spoofed - I am not sure if it would affect workgroup-only machines.

Also check the subnet mask on the new PC in case it somehow has an incorrect subnet mask overriding the router-allocated IP details.

Finally is there any firewall software that came with the new laptop like Norton Internet Security? dlan75 already suggested this, and it's definitely a likely cause, some of these products need to be specifically told that the network you're on is trusted.

dlan75: mis-spoke, I was referring to netbios, not netbeui. Netbios is still used by windows as a way of sharing things like hostnames. It is now largely transparent.

I can ping the "server" by name and by IP, and can ping the laptop by name and by IP, so it seems to me that netbios IS working correctly.  But if, for instance, I try to map a network drive on the laptop and hit browse, the workgroup never opens.  It really seems like it's a netbios problem, except I can ping the server by name.  I must admit I didn't think of adding to the hosts file.  I guess it's possible it could help. I think timestamps don't really matter in a non-domain since there isn't any way to confirm which unit is the master authority.

Thanks to everyone who is helping me, by the way.

Hi,
again, your problem does nt come from anything else than rights management. Netbios resolves the name properly so it isn't the problem, it has nothing to do on shares apart from resolving names into IPs.
Look again on your shares properties and security options (on the shared folders) and / or a firewall somewhere bloking the network.

Thanks,

Again, I would tend to agree that it is a rights management issue, except... ( from the original post)... "The problem is, he can not see the workgroup resources and no one else can see him".  Rights on the XP "server" wouldn't cause his laptop to not show up in the peers "My Network Places" when viewing the entire network.  I had his firewall off during all of my testing. Port 139 IS open on the "server"

Hi,
Hum ... wierd ...
Lets start all over again :
Can you make sure you also switched off windows firewall?
Disable his firwall, and antivirus.
Can you recheck that all IP parameters (mask, gateway, ...) are configured properly?
Can you recheck the security settings on the shared folder and the shared persmisisons (make sure you are not using the simple sharing mode)
Can you see if you can connect the computer with a cable to the network (sometimes you can have some troubles on wireless)
Can you make sure the wireless network allows file and printer sharing (check that this is installed on your network settings on the laptop also)
I think that's about it for now.
