Connected to the internet but http, ftp, or https will not work

I am fairly advanced with computers, but I can not fix this problem I am having. I am connected to the internet. Everything is successful. I have tried this both with my firewall on or off. I have no virus software running. I can ping for example ping www.google.com just fine. But windows IE, firefox, my ftp program, AIM, etc. nothing like that will work at all. It worked one day, the next day it did not. Is it the computer, my router? I have no idea at this point. Please help me out if you can.
