I have a windows 98 computer and when I go to sites where I need to put a password in I am getting error messsages authorization required? Or it will just jump to a error page. can you help?

Hello....I getting a 401 authorization required mesage when I go to certain sites that need a password, or when a password pop-up windows needs to come up, its saying denied access. I have a windows 98 computer that I recently reformated and I think im missing one of the security patches or something. I have tried going to Microsoft to fixed this but no luck. Please help.
