Why Many IP Adresses?

I want to know why there is a provision in WIN-2K to give a NIC more than one IP Addresses?

Also referred to as Virtual Segmentation - one physical segment, but more than one logical subnet. Doesn't reduce network traffic, but possibly restricts communication between different groups of computers.

Or if you are using it as a web server. Each domain needs it's own IP.
Under Solaris we use this all the time.  They are called virtual interfaces.

The primary use is for different web sites being hosted on one machine.  Each web server is configured to listen to a different IP address and therefore we can shut one down without the others getting upset.

If you have a web server (like IIS on WIn NT), you can host many different websites on the one box.

The way HTTP works, the browsers expect to find the web pages at port 80 of the IP address for the host.

The EASIEST (but not only) way to have multiple web sites on the same machine is to have a different public IP address for each.

The web server software (IIS) knows that when an inquiry comes in on IP address #1, it is meant for website X, while IP address #2, is meant for website Y.

The same thinking applies for any IP based service. FTP, TELNET, E-Mail, etc. This just allows you to separate the inbound traffic even though it's all on the same machine.

It's not just in Win2k, by the way. NT and 9x allow it, and all versions of Unix / Linux / FreeBSD allow it. Another use for it is if you are changing the ip address of a server - it can be available on both ip addresses for a changeover period.

I think all the answers seems to be correct.  Now you all suggest whom should i give the point.

vsamtani:

I do not think that you can assign multiple addresses to a NIC in Win-9x.  If it so HOW?
ravidatta

by adding additional TCP/IP protocol
AFAIK,

Win95 and Win98 do not support multiple IP address per single nic.

The only way to have two IP addresses on Win98 is to have multiple NICs.

Dave
p.s. Since it's only 10 points, just go ahead and give it to whomever you want. Just please don't leave it open.

Dave
Thanks Reden!
Two IP addresses on one nic in Win9x: by adding TCP/IP in more than once to the network control panel, and configuring each with different settings.

(As reden said already)

Thanks Vijay

I have done it. And its working fine.
