"Simple" Home networking question

Hello,

I have a home network with 2 computers and a printer. They are connected through a hub, which in turn is connected through a DSL modem. Both systems are running Win2000. My question is why can't I see the files on the other computer.

I have setup the entire C drive as a share on one system, but when I go to map to the share I can not find it even if I browse. I can see the other computer when I look at "computers near me", but I can't map to the share. The frustrating thing is that this used to work, but doesn't any longer....

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

There are few posibilities..
1. Login to each computer as an administrator and check weather there is security problem. or is it working in administrator account
2. when you open the entire network and when you go for file browsing try refreshing it. F5 key, may be your refresh rate is low.
3. check for the network properties, on the cofiguration tab weather there is "File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks" you got to check that..
>They are connected through a hub, which in turn is connected through a DSL modem
this is the problem. If they are both accessing the internet, then your provider is assigning the ip addresses, and is filtering the network. If they didn't then everyone (your neighbors, and other strangers) on the network would have access to your files (not a good thing)
try installing NetBEUI on both machines, but a better solution is to get a router (not a hub), connect the dsl modem to the wan side, and the machines to the LAN side, use dhcp on the router to assign ip addresses to the machines (private addresses)
another solution would be ICS, with two NICs on one machine (one connected to the dsl modem, and one to the hub)
Gravitate How are you doing with this?

Harry, I disagree. I think I hit it on the head. they are using a hub, and hubs can't NAT
a split would be ok by me though!
Welllll I'd disagree.  Gravitate said "I can see the other computer when I look at "computers near me", but I can't map to the share" which I think eliminates NAT as the problem.  I think its a 'RIGHTS' problem but we don't know because he never came back to us.  Unless, its a phantom that he's seeing....  You could be right, I could be right, stevenlewis could be right but we just don't know.
So, a split, no refund?
Actually, double the points and then a split LOL
Recommend a split, good points by both

Will accomplish tomorrow.
