D-Link 704P router stops Windows Update
I am unable to download any files from the Windows Update site on either my Win 98 or XP computers when going through my D-Link DI-704P router. Both computers are able to view web pages and download files from other sites and I was even able to open up two ports on the router to use a music/file sharing service. (the problem existed before I started sharing files)
I am able to view the Windows Update site and scan my computer for updates but when I try to download the updates it stops after like 5 seconds at no more than 140 KB and stays there. After I cancel the download attempt I have to close Windows Update from the list you see after hitting Ctrl, Alt, Delete and it seems to send the error report ok with my XP machine. When I bypassed the router I was able to download updates from the site just fine.
I have Ameritech DSL and use the SpeedStream 5360 “modem” to connect to the internet. The Windows 98 machine was the machine I first had the DSL connected to and I bought the router after I built the XP machine.
Is there a specific port I can open up or some other setting in the router I can change to use Windows Update?

You might need to reduce the MTU on each computer in order to pass through that router.

Hmmm, I have the same setup, and have no problems with the update
you are using the default ip address for the router
192.168.0.1
check the access control page (from advanced) and make sure nothing is there
in setup you have PPP over Ethernet?
max idle time is zero?
primary dns 0.0.0.0
try moving one of the machines to the dmz (reboot the router) and see if it works

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the speedstream also. I've seen similar issues with a LinkSys and simply upgrading the firmware fixed it.

Obyte - I no longer have any specific ports that I opened so the ports that are open are the default ones that the router normally uses.

Irmoore - According to the D-Link web site the latest firmware for my router in 2.57 Build 3 which is what I have.

when I moved one of my machines to the dmz, I had to reboot the router for it to take effect

Stevenlewis - I have rebooted the router after I moved one of the computers to the DMZ and I have even tried turning off the power to the router and DSL box. I have never been able to use Windows Update on either computer while going through the router and allways have to bypass it for it to work which sucks.
Are you sure it's the router and not a problem upstream?
Have you tried it without the router? You can put a free personal firewall up while you're "running naked' on the Internet, just to locate the problem (your router, or the ISPs infrastructure).
Have you talked to the provider to have them check the system beyond you router?
We have an old proxy at work that does the same thing. It pretty much stops in the same neighborhood every time (varies a little depending on what other traffic is passing).
Try going to a test site (like www.broadbandreports.com), run the speed test and other evaluation utilities. They have one (I think it's the speed test) that'll give you a report of what your MTU and Window look like "to the Internet;" and offer a utility ("DRTCP") to adjust those values on the system.
It could be just a bad port at the provider's CO.

Stevenlewis - The MTU settings link did the trick.
I had to lower the value to 1454 and now both machines are downloading from Windows Update no problem.
I have spent like a month reading F.A.Q. pages, doing web searches, and asking people I know for help to no avail. I got the solution here in less than a day.
