Hotmail pop3 & SMTP config

I´ve never really used Outlook, but I did a search for it.
If you´re using Outlook Express 6, you can chose different identities (Where Hotmail is one of the available ones).

This should be their SMTP Servers ...

I could not find any POP3 Servers & some people say´s that there are none. Hope this helped you just a little :)

The Hotmail free service is only available by using their HTTP interface (that is Microsoft Outlook client).

In order to use your Hotmail account via POP3/SMTP protocols (enabled in every mail client) you should subscribe the "MSN Extra Storage" or "MSN Internet Service" (by paying a fee).

Alternatevily you could have a look at these 3rd part services:

The SMTP server, for ALL e-mail accounts, will be the one that is provided by your ISP - they will let you know the name. This is to prevent spamming - ie the sender of an e-mail should always be traceable.
Standard name is likely to be either SMTP.xxx.com or mail.xxx.com

The POP3 servers are provided by the organisations that you have registered e-mail accounts with unless they want you to use web mail to read your e-mails because that way they get you to visit their web site where they can bombard you with adverts that they then get paid for.

You can determine this from visiting their web site and looking for help.

PS.
Your ISP should have provided you with a POP3 server name for use with mickynoear@isp.com e-mail addresses (or similar).

I have used Outlook Express 6 for accessing hotmail.
Only the thing is to get on to hotmail HTTP you need to create a new Identity for hotmail(Through File-->Identity-->Add Identity).

To find out the pop3 and smtp servers
Run nslookup
>set type=MX
>type the server name
It should display all the mail servers list.

As far as i'm aware pop3/SMTP access is not possible for hotmail.

my recomendation for you in this instance is top go to a site such as www.download.com and do a search for email programs that are free and can connect to hotmail (there are a good number as many people have a similar problem to you) however i am unable to recomend any as i use Outlook Expres XP wich cives me performancs goodenough to not be bothered to change aplication.

here are some sagestions for looking for SMTP help and accessing servers:
there are three things you can do for the SMTP given here mainly for any referance needs
1.
You can use one of the SMTP servers stated by  "The_Scorpion"
2.
You can use your local ISP's SMTP server which is normaly easy to find.
3.
another option for SMTP is to install an SMTP server on your own machine and send all mail through that (much faster than any other option) however this third option is very difficult to set up and still doesn't sort out the POP3 problem.

i have found out that hotmail is nor pop3 nor SMTP. but HTTP. never mind then. but if sumbody comes up with a good apps that can download mails from hotmail or a link to it, real fast, i'm gnna give the points to him/her.

Also read fontazzo's comment; he's the only other person so far who has answered your question.  The_Scorpion has said something interesting, but that's only for sending your e-mail.  You will have to use Hotmail Popper for reading.  Actually you might have to use The_Scorpion's research there for sending, if fontazzo's and my links can't help in that department.

PS:  the_insane_one83 knows what he is talking about as well.  Only nomorefuzzylogic and prasadklk are a waste of space.

i tried  fabiovieira's tip, got my hotmail working but apparently i have received email from pop3hot informing of new smtp and pop servers which start with izy.mail.x.x and that access is only free for 15 days then you pay.

has anyone of you made it work beyond 15 days?

Well hotmail is wb base a therefore is imap so chose imap in  your mail software and it should work fine and the you move the email to a local box with outlook or outlook express you can ever automise the process ans with windows xp it realy easy to do with msn explorer it support local email storing

well, my question was :  

1) what to put in the pop3 and smtp host server domain field in any  e-mail client for hotmail?

2) If there is no way that i can send/receive hotMails via this method, can u suggest any good hotmail proxy (other than MS outlook :))?  err..a free one...

well here are the answers:

1) hotmail uses webDAV protocol. google for it if u want to know more bout it. So, it is not possible to directly connect with hotmail server by using pop3/smtp protocol, unless you have registered (read "paid") to use the service.

to fabiovieira, nidash, bick2000, pop3hot is a service in which you get/send your mail from/to pop3hot server, and the server sends it through the webDAV protocol to hotmail server. The service is not free, thus the 15 days limitation trial. You have to pay to use it w/o the limitation.

2) well, a free one huh? it has been a long time. but somebody did come up with a free fix. here: http://www.boolean.ca/hotpop/ has a product called Hotmail Popper (hotpop) which i have found to be good, small and simple, reliable and intuitive to use. It works in a similar way to MS Outlook and pop3hot (emulate a pop3/SMTP server then access hotmail webDAV server), but works w/o pop3hot limitation and bulkiness of MS Outlook. hotpop can be used with any email client that accesses a pop3/SMTP server.

Instead of using Pop3 and SMTP, hotmail uses an HTTP (IMAP) server.  I have it set up on my outlook and it works fine.  Here is the server address:

You will also be required to put in your Account and Password.

I dont understand how you use that link in setting up the account. Could you provide more info on the Account settings in Outlook? Thanks!

What version of windows outlook are you using since hotmail with outlook 2002 + is easy to install but on outlook 2000 it a pain ?

I have 2003... i tryed installing it, but it seemed to hang up my e-mail downloads (next to the fact that it didn't work)

1. Start up Microsoft Outlook 2003.
2. Go to 'Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts' from the menus at the top.
3. Select (= highlight) your hotmail account from the list on the left by clicking on it once.
4. Click the 'Change...' button on the right.
5. Click the 'More Settings ...' button at the bottom-right.
6. Click the 'Connection' tab at the top.

Play with the settings in there; that might help you.  That's the only thing I can think of, apart from checking to see that there are no dodgy connections between computer / modem / 'phone line (by unplugging everything and pluggin it back in again).

I've probably said more than I need to in those five steps above; don't take it as me being patronising, I just wanted to avoid any possible confusion.

I set up the account, and now im getting a taskbar popup bubble that says "Cannot connect to Hotmail service and it is now set to offline"

I think maybe your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may be able to help you.  That's like, AOL or freeserve or whoever.  They probably have a technical support line.  Did you try changing all the options on the 'Connection' tab that I mentioned above?

While clicking on send and redceive button on MS Outlook I am getting the following errors. This is happening on one machine but on the other machines I am able to send/receive emails for the same user account. Would anybody help me to find the solution for the same.

I've tested all of the suggested SMTPs for hotmail, and none will work. Do certain servers only apply for certain addreses, or can you use any of them. Anybody know a command line program called x-mail? If not, can someone search and try to make it work for them and tell me how they did it, i've being trying for days. Any response will greatfully accepted;

I am wondering why someone didn't just post a simple solution.

The feature is built into the software  if you are using Outlook 2003 and want to access your Hotmail account.

When setting up a new email account in Outlook 2003, you are given a list of options about the type of account you are configuring.  If you look at the list, you will see that Outlook 2003 has an entry for HTTP after IMAP & POP3.  Select the HTTP option then select HOTMAIL.  Proceed with the rest of the prompts to setup the account.  

Remove the old problematic account that was initially setup.

This is possible quite easliy as some of you have said through the http setting method of Outlook or Outlook Express - BUT one word of warning!!!!!!  A while ago I downloaded all my Hotmail onto Outlook and remained on-line (in the dial up days...), a short while later I decided to empty some of the items I'd downloaded from my Hotmail web page.  Feeling rather pleased with my self I went back to Outlook to reply to some of my downloaded messages and they had syncronised with my web page and everything was gone!  I'd also emptied the Trash Can.  DOH!

So just remember that Hotmail works differently to most other pop3 mail in its sync methods...What you do on one is reflected in the other - quite sh*t actually.

Well, I think I need to mention that using Outlook (and it's variations ) is not a true solution, as MS masks the process via its beautiful bloated GUI. What I asked for was the value to put for pop3 and smtp field, which is an acceptable standard for e-mail accounts ( aside from IMAP ). Actually, the free hotmail account is accessed via webDAV protocol. There is a way to access it . Here's a live working demo, tho it's a bit old.

note that if you happen to have a server / IIS, you can program your own php/perl program to retrieve your emails and display it the way you want it to be using text manipulation. Don't ask me to explain how :-).

Try googling MrPostMan its a Java service that u can install to access POP3..
MrPostMan is a service that can be used to access Yahoo! and others as well, and works well with any mail client.
Email client setup points to
                     POP3: localhost port 11110

smtp: just use the one provided by ip, or try IIS smtp service.

Well, here's some interesting or pretty useless information, I Did a couple of serches and this is what I found:

Mail Exchanger = mx2.hotmail.com
Primary Name Server = ns1.hotmail.com
Responsible Mail Address = dns.hotmail.com

Use It, Don't Use it...
Completely Up to you.

I never heard of pop3 for Hotmail , else one can configured outlook express for hotmail and sunchronize the account . In this case pop3 is replaced by hotmail http service .

Hey Hotmailpopper from http://www.boolean.ca/hotpop/ is not free cost 17.5$. But does serve the purpose. You may try incredimail www.incredimail.com it's has free but adds adverisment.
There is an opensource initative for yahoo named yahoo popper.

I use the POP3 server "pop.mail.yahoo.com" (no quotes) to get my Yahoo mail with Outlook. It seems to work ok, the SMTP server could be your ISP's or Yahoo's "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" (no quotes again). I hope this helps you, who just like me, were trying "pop3.yahoo.com" and "smtp.yahoo.com". This has been working for two months and so far I've got no Yahoo's bills in my mailbox, so it's all right.

The proxy setting for yahoo are:

      Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)

      Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)

while we're at it, here's google mail too:

      Google Gmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)

      Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP

Use Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook the best two programs for Hotmail.

I also suggest getting the msn messenger 7.0 and a link to Hotmail.com

If you are on a network with a server you may want to ask your admin to forward your POP3 accounts and hotmail into your main Inbox, that way you will always have a backup of all your e-mails.

Otherwise pay for MSN or Hotmail Extra Storage and get their pop3 to link up directly with your preffered app.

Create a free e-mail account with www.fastmail.fm

Under options> Go to Pop Links. And configure your hotmail / yahoo settings. Configure it to pull mail from your hotmail/yahoo account every 3 hours(min. for free account) and also to delete it from your hotmail if you are space conscious.

Fastmail offers free IMAP. Use any e-mail client (Eudora/OE) to access your hotmail lying in your fastmail account.

SMTP uses mail.messagingengine.com which is paid. Therefore, I suggest using your own free SMTP server (many available) and set that option to localhost.

If you right click the start menu, click properties. Select Start menu and click customize. Select hotmail as your default e-mail acount. it will appear on the start menu. make a shortcut. you can only access hotmail over the internet. It is a HTTP e-mail server, not POP3.

I have a Hotmail Extra Storage account yet I still don't have pop3 access, at least there is no mention of it. The only thing I can do is aggregate mail into my hotmail account from other accounts using pop3, something that you can no longer do with the free account.

Any ideas anyone?

I cant be arsed to read all them posts, but Outlook 2000 and higher has the capabilities to connect to Hotmail when you setup a mail account.  However I hear roumors that they stopped this service as it made it easer for spammers to send mass mail to mailing lists with an anonimouse hotmail address.

Yahoo Im not sure about, but I read somewhere it can be done

AOL are sneeky buggers and use IMap mail configuration, again Outlook 2000 and higher can cope

Oh and Hotmail do do a POP3 address service, but you have to pay £££

To clarify, I pay for a Hotmail Extra Storage Account, but find no reference to POP access.

Even using Outlook 97 (not Express) connecting to this Hotmail account wasn't possible (though I don't intend to buy Outlook 2000 or 2003 to find out if that is the solution).

I now use Mozilla Thunderbird with the webmail extentions, and find they work very well.

I've used other TBird extentions to "extend" TBird to all the areas I've always wanted from a client program - calendar, RSS feedreader, USENET news reader, multiple signatures, without all the other stuff I never used in Outlook, contact managers etc.

MS have lost an Outlook customer because it lacks flexibility and was looking old fashioned.

The story of POP continues like this… A few months ago some folks on the live team hatched a plan to finally offer POP to Hotmail Plus users ($19.95 a year). They will be able to use POP access from any device. They have plans to offer POP to all users (all premium and free) but theyaren't ready to do that yet. I can't comment on a timeframe for when free users will get POP.

If you do take advantage of this premium feature and sign up for Hotmail plus you'll also get an ad-free experience, more storage, larger attachment support, and a non expiring account.

The POP service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and use SMTP authentication. This is to ensure that your email address and password are not subject to tampering. The settings are the following:

POP: pop3.live.com (port 995)
SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25)
Note: make sure you check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default).
Username: your full email address
Password: your Windows Live ID password

In addition, Hotmail has a new piece of software called Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, which basically works exactly like POP, i.e. downloads all your hotmail emails onto your computer. However, the program only works with Outlook 2003/2007. I have been using this program for a few months and it works great. You can put either of the one means either you can put ip addres or hostname ,you check the same through NSlookup command line if ip is known to you through NSlookup you can resolve ip address to hostname ,or hostname to ip address through pinging the ip address.

Microsoft now has a free mail program called Windows Live Mail.  It looks just like Outlook.  It very fast and works great.  

For you to setup POP, you need to have Paid Version. But you can install Outlook Connector and get the same end result.

If its not already been said - Windows 7 includes a program called "Windows Live Mail" (Which is also downloadable for vista/xp)  This eccepts Hotmail as default.  Infact if you download Windows live messenger and live mail together, you can use your MSN live login and it will automaticly configure live mail to download your hotmail e-mails.  Live Mail Is also Free, which is always a good thing.

Windows live mail will connect to an exchange server via webconnect or imap.  but im sure someone will create a direct plugin.

(FTR - it says Orange messenger because since I logged in my Live ID with my Orange mobile, for some stupid reason its branded my account... but it is actually MS-Live-Messenger)

It is available as a free download through the Windows Live Essentials update, using which gives you access to Live Messenger, Live Mail, Live Photo Gallery, among other tools...
