XP home not connecting to other computers...

I have a small network of 4 computers.  Win98, Win2000, and WinXP(home).  The WinXP home was recently added to the network (Dell 2400).

Problem:  WinXP can not access any of the other computers files or printers.  I can map it, other computers can be seen from my network place but once I try to connect it would give me an error:
"\\server is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use the network resource.  Contact System administratir....   The network path was not found."  This happens when I try to connect to the win2000 computer (is a server computer running under a workgroup).

"\\sharename is not accessible..........Same...  The specific server cannot perform the requested operation"  This happens when I try to access the win98 computers.

More info: the win98 computers can only goes as far as seeing the shared files(which takes a long time) on the winxp computer.  When trying to open the file it gives the error

First, diable simple file sharing:

http://www.winbookcorp.com/_technote/WBTA20000876.htm

Second, go into your TCP/IP properties and make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.

Third, go to the advanced tab of your Local Area Connection properties and disable your firewall, if it is enabled.

See if that helps you.

techguy04,
definately try the suggestions by James.  In addition, you may need to turn on file sharing for whatever folder you want to access to.

Hi
From your post, i got the understanding of that its only the xp home machine with a problem, rest of the machines can see each other, and share resources. In addition to the above posts, try these

(1) did you installed the SP1 on the xp box, installing sp1 can also cause slow down of the xp box, make sure to get updates after sp1.

(2)In Explorer, click Tools
Click Folder Options
Click the View tab,
Uncheck Automatically Search for Network Folders and Printers in Advanced settings list.
disable that option, it also slows down your network access, as by defualt xp looks for network shares and printers.

run that command on xp home
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

double check the workgroup name on all machines, should be same
doubel check that you have similar user accounts on all three machines with identical passwords, that is user ABC with password XYZ should be created on all machines with same password.
make sure you have shared folders and have allowed access to them.

finally, win xp home file sharing, check the following

hope it wil help

Below is a list of what I have tried:

Pinging = DONE (all computers can ping each other)
Checked workgroup name = DONE
Same logon and password = DONE
Turned off firewall = DONE
Checked IP Address = DONE
Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP = DONE
Enable guest account = DONE
Tried = net use s: \\Servername\sharename <password> /user: domainworkgroup/logon
Tried = Net Use X: \\servername\sharename /Persistent:yes

Inregards to Simple File Sharing, XP Home does not let you turn it off.  It is only the XP  machine that I am having problems with.  I just need the XP machine to be able to access the network.

The network is able to share its files and printer with the other computers but not with the XP home machine.

xp home file sharing is bit different from xp professional, if you read the following article bit more closely you will find the solution
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpnetsh.htm
I have tried everything and nothing works.

Does anyone else have any ideas?
OK here is the latest on my computers.  I am now have trouble pinging the other computers from the XP machine.  It was not like that before.  The other machines are still able to ping the XP machines.  Does taht mean that my connection is bad or my card?

Going crazy....!

I have tried running the winstock.  All it does was just reset my tcp/ip back to its original settings when first installed.  I had to put in the static ip address again but that still did not work.

I am now able to see and view the share printer and drives of the win98 computer but it would not let me access the shared drive.

ERROR: "An error occurred while reconnecting m: to \\share\sharename

MS Win Ntwk: The local device name is already in use.  This connection had not been restored."

Any ideas and any more tips, info, suggestions,...?

Thanks
ok, remove/disconnect all shares, restart the machine, map to network share using net use command and use wild card instead of drive letter that is *.
i am positive you have same user names with identical passwords on both machines.
I will definately give it a try.  I am also increasing the point value as I get more points.
nazirahmed,

Sorry, but that did not work either.  I called Dell and asked them for help.  They said that there is nothing wrong with the intergrated NIC and that the diagnostic tool that they help me run to test it, indicated that nothing was wrong.  The weird thing about it is that both lights, on and activity, are lit at all  times.
did you try the following?
run that command on xp home
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
after the command restart and set your ip address again.
also check in your local area connection properties what protocols and services you have installed.
Thank you for all your help.  Unfortunately, it did not help me but was very informative.  i am going to award Nazirahmed with half the points.  Furthermore, I think it was Nazirahmed who understood my question from the beginning.

Again, thanks...
if the netsh command didnt work, then try reinstalling the Network card it self. try to get the latest drivers for the NIC then, first, remove it from devices, remove all protocols along with it, then shut down the machine, remove power cable, unplug the card physcially, plug it to a another slot and restart the machine. after restart it will start hardware wizard,  specify the new drivers, reinstll and reconfigure all settings including tcp/ip, file and print sharing, netbuei over tcp/ip, workgroup, user names etc.  try that and let us know the result.
I have already tried to reinstall the NIC driver.  It also have the latest update.  I can  not install the NIC to another slot b/c it is an intergrated NIC.

Everything is working now since I installed WinXP on the Win2000 machine as a dual boot.  It must have been the Win2000 that was giving me the problem.  Anyway, thanks for all your time and help.
