asked on

can I connect two computers using same phone line and transfer data btween the two....

I have laptop and a PC both having modems and run on Windows XP.    I want to share data between the two computers .
Can I interconnect both using same phone line ?  I don't have a network card.   Is the data sharing possible by using the phone line and the modems , only?? If yes , How can I do it..??

PCAnywhere used to be able to do that. It is owned by Symantec now.

www.symantec.com

An alternative is if you have a dial-up account with an ISP, dial them both in and setup FTP on the one you want to transfer to and record the IP address of it, then hit it from your other one.

It will be slow but it will work.

Modem connections are rather slow. Even if you have a 56k modem the upload will not have more than 28k. And I can tell that a copying data with 2.5 - 3 kBytes/s is no fun.

Other ways to share data is using a serial connection or USB.

I agree with both of these guys.  Funny how patient we used to be before high speed Internet access came along.  I remember watching a cursor go across the screen at 300 baud and though it was the greatest thing since sliced bread!

With files getting larger the modem idea and transfer of information can be painful.  I would check out PCAnywhere and use the USB, serial (COM) or printer ports if available for the transfer.

Please keep this in mind though!  By the time you spend $185.00 for PCAnywhere, you could have spent less than 150 and got 2 network cards, cables and a small hub.  Have a true network.  Something to think about.

Here is a Microsoft KB article on making a direct cable connection with XP:

In other words, get the pocket book out.  Do they even sell cross-over cables?  I have always made my own.
