XP Pro Networking problems
Trying to network two computers using xp pro.
I have a d-link wireless hub and the second computer is connected via a ethernet cable to the hub.
When I try and connect to the second computer- I type
\\Nameofcomputer\c$
But it brings up password screen that has that username/guest and a password slot.
I put the password in - but it doesn't change the window- it just blinks and does not conect.
I have gotomypc on both computers and the tech cannot get it working....
We have tried changing all passwords, usernames, etc...to no avail
suggestions?

If you plug both into the hub (for testing) do they work? If so, that narrows it to the wireless signal.
If not, you need to reset the router to its default configuration, to deliver DHCP, reboot it.
And then reset the TCP of both computers to automatically get an IP from DHCP. Reboot them.
As long as you are on the same workgroup, and the logins are OK, you should now be connecting.

I would also look in the Local security policy and make sure that you are not trying to log in with the administrator account as administrator accounts I believe are default log on locally as well. You would have to look at user right policys and make sure that your account isn't limited to interactive log on only.

If you get a password screen the two computers are talking
check this:
right click my computer, computer name tab, change button
make sure both computers are in the same workgroup also,
the guest account cannot be used to access an administrative share(c$), it is also disabled by default on xp pro
you can verify this by clicking start, control panel, user accounts, advanced tab, advanced button
you will see the guest account has a red x over it
create a new user on each pc with the same username and password, give them admin rights and then try to map a drive to
\\computername\c$ and logon with the account you just created (note if you logon to XP with this account, you should not get prompted to enter a username and password to access the other computer, provided you followed these directions.
