How to address a computer behind router over broadband

Is it possible for me to remotely connect to an xp machine behind a DG842M netgear router that has a 256/64 dsl connection?

I can access the router, but I'm not sure how to access the computer's address inside the local network behind the router.

If I use "remote assistance" it works fine, so there must be some address translation going on in this process that I don't understand.

Hi micknorman11,

I guess you mean remote desktop

enable remote desktop in the computer that you want to connect going to right-click mycomputer --> properties --> remote and enable that option

Good thing to look

How to change the listening port for Remote Desktop

Also temporarily turn off firewall and check if that would help

egiblock, your spot on with what I need

sunray, you were getting close to complete with the 3389 port forwarding suggestion

... one last question ... what type of packets am i forwarding? TCP/UDP or TCP or UDP are the options this router appears to be giving me.
i have opened both tcp and udp port 3389 to access through remote desktop connections.
