I only know plug both end of the crossover cable into two computer's network port, but I don't know how to configue both computer. the easiest way i find for just two computers is on the xp machine goto control panel and then click networking. in the top left i think is a "set up network for home/small office" click that and follow the instructions. then if you want it to create a disk for easy setup on your windows2000 machine it will.

this will set up all the ip etc. all you have to do is select which folders on either computer you want to share, to do this right click on the folder and select sharing/security, type in a name that you will recognise and click ok, then when you go to the other computer and click network places it should show all the shared folders on the other computer.

or you can do as cah28 said and load up my computer/explorer and type in \\othercomputername\c$ and this will give you all files on the c:/ drive. if you have the right permisions.

hope this helps

You'll have to understand, that your configuration is the same, as if you have a big network. You'll have to prove, that all functionality of a network environement is working.

The difference is - nobody can hack you, as you are alone and seperate!
So you can give all resources for free without passwords and security (if you trust the second mashines admin!). You can keep the firewall be off (if you don't connect elsewhere). Thats the way to minimize your struggle.
the easiest way would be to set the ip protokoll to "automaticaly obtain ip" and plug in the lan cable.
as the clients will not find any dhcp server, they will use apipa addresses and your network will work.
Check these Link for the configuration assistance. I am not sure which OS you are using on the other computer. So here is a list of all .... :)

Hi, everyone:

Thanks for all of your help. My connection works now. But I have to set up both (XP, win2K) computer ip and subnet as following: 192.168.0.1; 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.2; 255.255.255.0, otherwise it won't work. I can't set up automatically obtain IP, two computers won't talk. I don't know why. My question is: I didn't go to internet, why I have to setup TCP/IP? If I only want to make coonection b/w two computers, don't care about internet, which way setting is correct? Even thought my two computer can talk now, I still want to make sure I understand everything. Thanks!
Ltyao, I'm glad to hear you were able to network your two PC's, TCP/IP is the network communication protocol of choice for internal networks as well as the Internet, even a network of two!

Chris.
It's just like "why should i speek loud..." - even if you don't ever want to speak to a big audience, you should use the same "connection" to the partner, speech! In case of your computers it's TCP/IP
