192.168.1.1 does not exist
I need to find the settings on an existing Linksys router so I can use the same settings on a wireless Linksys ethernet PCI adapter on a PC so the two will connect. Linksys said to go to 192.168.1.1 on the PC connected to the router via an ethernet cable and the settings previously entered during Router Set-up will appear on the screen (or I can find them thru obvious menu items).
That's the background, not the question. To do a reality check, I entered 192.168.1.1 on my home PC (no router, no wireless connection but has a wireless ethernet interface (unused), just to see if that IP address actually exists. It appears to NOT exist just like I typed in a non-existant URL name.
So, is this the EXPECTED result if I do the above on a PC that is not connected to a router via an ethernet cable and hence nothing is amiss? I can not understand that. Either an IP address is there or it is not there. I can't see why I will get any other result on the PC with the router. Yes or No????
And if NO, what ip address should I enter to see the router settings. I do not have the model numbers but they are all 2.4 GHz Wireless-G models, purchased in the last month together and the selling salesrep said they are desigined to work together.
One more thing the router connects to a random Dell laptop with a wireless adapter of unknown brand and unknown setup parameters so the router is set up properly. And the router is connected to a cable modem so the whole point here is to get the PC with the wireless PCI adapter to connect to the cable modem and the internet. Just to give you the big picture.

I have done a search for 192.168.1.1 in the Networking section of this site and note a number of people have trouble connecting to 192.168.1.1 even on the PC with the router connected to it. Oh, and problems other people have had have been for a number of reasons - e.g. IP address could have been changed, web administration disabled, all sorts of things where the router has been previously configured.

An IP address is like an address. The router will always have that address, but you need a path to it. The path is either the wire or the wireless. Does this make it clearer? I guess it's like having a house on an island... it has an address, but unless there is a bridge to get to it, or you have a boat (place, whatever), you can't reach it!

There should be a connection of some sort to reach to the device you want to configure.
As suggested ethernet cable is the best option. Try connecting directly to any machine and in your network explorer type 'http://192.168.1.1' and you should get a window asking for a username and password (the booklet with the router explains the username and password) once these are put in you should get configuration page.
-Note that the above will only work if router address is '192.168.1.1' and has not been changed.
-Suppose if it was changed, reset it to factory defaults by pressing the small button at the back of the router(the booklet explains how to reset it to factory defaults) and then try the same IP to reach your router.
-Also please note that different manufaturers have different default IP set in the router to be configured.

also, using IP Address 192.168.1.1 with the router ALSO having the same address will stop you from being able to communicate with it.
If you set your Workstation for DHCP and plug it into the router, you will automatically be assigned an IP address and have no problems configuring the router using the 192.168.1.1 to get to it.

TO Everyone that replied. Although my question did say the PC was connected to the internet, that information is spread between the first and last paragraph and obviously no one replying noticed that. So to be clear. PC # 1 is connected to the router (which is already set up) which is connected to the cable modem which is connected to the internet !!! And the router setup was somewhat OK as it can also connect wirelessly to a random Dell Laptop which has some kind of wireless ethernet interface.
And PC # 2 has a wireless adapter also set up and no other internet connection. The router and the adapter are both from Linksys and are designed to work together. In other words, '192.168.1.1' is not an address like www.yahoo.com that is visible from every PC connected to the internet. Since my own PC is not connected to the router, that is why I can't find that IP address. But when I enter '192.168.1.1' on the PC that is connected to the internet via the router and the cable modem I should see it and find the router settings. IS this RIGHT or WRONG?

Thanks to expert Lloydsev for explaining CLEARLY how IP addresses for routers work. Thanks for expert purplepomegranite for providing the correct default username password for the router. The latter was necessary for me to login to the router and find that someone had changed the default router settings (SSID was changed) and this prevented the router and the wireless PC with Linksys adaptor from connecting.
To connect to the router, the PC must be connected to it, either by wireless or wire. I would suggest by wire to first configure the router (as the wireless isn't set up, though most will automatically be set to open network).
If you are connected to your router, and it's IP address is 192.168.1.1, it is as simple as typing the address into a browser (at least, certainly should be).
