The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

"Media disconnected"....How to solve this?

Asked by xenon_je in Miscellaneous Networking, TCP/IP

Tags: , ,

I want to connect 2 desktops in a LAN.
Both run Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
My problem is I can make any of them to see themself, not to speack to see each other.
So I would like as a first step to make PC1 to see himself, to see PC1...so I will insist on only 1 computer this time (after I will maybe open a different thread for other questions).

If I run ipconfig /all the result is:
C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

        Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : PC1
        Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . :
        Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
        IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-11-7C-E8-9B

PPP adapter NetZero:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
        Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 63.19.236.14
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 63.19.236.14
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 64.136.20.121
                                            64.136.28.121

As you see on the result above I have Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network, and to connect the 2 computers Iuse a simple ethernet cable, no router, no....

when I do ping localhost I have the result:
C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER>ping localhost

Pinging XENONRONAR [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

The strange thing is that at TCP/IP I selected to use a certain IP address:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
In a way its normal if the state of the Ethernet is "media disconnected"

When I open Explorer, and select "My network places" I can see anything, and I can find any computer...normaly I should be able to see at least myself...

Any ideas anybody?

thank you very much,
