Want to revamp network

I'm basically a new admin for all the systems across a network of about 200+ employees. I wanted to impliment some features that might better assist everyone as far as security, communication, and connectivity goes.

The current setup right now basically, is Microsoft Exchange serve 2003 which enables everyone's user logon to the domain, and as far as their email and communication goes, it's all based on a pop3 server we have hosted through a 3rd party web/email host website.

What i'm looking for bascally, is some advice on what I could impliment to make the network seem more enjoyable. I'd like to impliment some type of instant messaging service. I've heard of the Jabber network and I'm not exactly sure if that's good or easy to impliment. I'd just sort of like a better way to message people on the network without having to call people over and over. It just seems much easier to trouble shoot quick issues over a messaging service rather than the phone.

Did you mean Microsoft 2003 server for user logons. Because exchange is for messaging/email??
If you are using exchange, the you can use domain accounts as .NET passports and use windows messenger for instant messaging

Yes we have exchange. We add users through the "Active Directory Users and Computers". However, we do not assign them exchange mail boxes. All we do is give them a login/password to logon to the Domain on windows. Their email addresses are just ones we assign them from a 3rd party email host and just set them up on their outlook accounts.

I did try to go into windows messenger and login with my username@domain but it says invalid email address.

Thanks for helping hope we can figure something out.
Sorry.

You cannot use windows messenger with exchange 2003. Either use exchange 2000 or MS Live communications server.
Well are there any alternatives for a Secure intranet chat system? I've been researching the Jabber network and it seems kinda neat. Not sure if there's a better one out there though.

I just think that instant messaging and able to send links to people over the intranet would be better than all these phone calls and e-mails going on.

yes you are correct jabber network is verygood messanger serive and its freesource .
we are uasing in our 60 user network .we installed the wildfire server integrated with mysqldatabse & pandion client on each pc. There are more  clients to connect to wildfireserver but pandion is verygood and did not consume the more memory or cpu resources.

Now install the wildfire server on wndows server .for downlaod & documentation use this url= http://www.jivesoftware.org/wildfire/ .only properly integrate with database server mysql using its driver bulitin.

and install the pandion client ,url=http://www.pandion.be/documentation/?n=Pandion&v=2.5

on desktop machines.

And create the users on wildfire server using its admin consol in browser and its accessible on every pc on LAN .using that user login to pandion like username@domain name.

Let me know if you have any problems...
Kadadi_v you say you installed wildfireserver and mysqldatabase on every client pc? or you just put pandion client on them?
