The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Can't connect to home network

I have an old Dell Precision 210 with built-in 3Com 3C918 network card and have just installed Windows XP.  When I plug in the internet cable and look at Local Area Connection Status:
Status = Connected,
Duration keeps ticking away as one would expect,
Speed = 100.0 Mbps.
Activity:
      Bytes Sent = 47,512 (these keep climbing
      Bytes Received = 0

I cannot get to any web pages from a browser.

If I open a command window and typeipconfig

I get the following:

Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
      Connection-specific DNS Suffix.:
      Autoconfiguration IP Address&:169.254.1.155
      Subnet Mask&......................&.:255.255.0.0
      Default Gateway&....................:

When I go to Local Area Connection Properties and click Configure it tells me

This device is working properly&.

When I click on Internet Protocol Properties, I can see that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically both have checks before them.

Ive plugged in two other machines to the same network cable and they work fine.

Ive tried installing a Lynksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN card (PCI) .  It says the card is installed and working properly but when I plug the network cable into the Lynksys I get a message for this connection (Local Area Connection 2) saying  Network cable unplugged.  Not certain if this relates to the first problem.

The Dell machine doesnt appear to pickup an IP address from the router.  Any suggestions?Start Free Trial
