The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Cisco ASA 5510 VPN client routing issue
Tags: asa, vpn, cisco, 5510, client
Hi All,

I have an issue with configuring an ASA 5510 (I will post the config if neccessary).  I would like to be able to have my VPN clients who have an address of 10.1.10.X to route across a VPN tunnel to another network at 10.10.10.x.  Currently everything internal can reach 10.10.10.X, however the VPN clients can not.  When the VPN clients connect they have the secure route for everything but the 10.10.10.X network, how would I add this to the secure routes and would that fix my issue?

Thanks

Did you enable split tunneling? Just change the mask on the split tunnel acl
access-list split_tunnel standard 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0

Also add that network to the nat-0 acl
access-list nat_0 permit ip 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.1.10.0 25.255.255.0

Hi lrmoore,

I suck at IOS right now so I have been using ASDM.  Yes I have split tunneling enabled. I just figured out that the entry in the ACL was backwards, and changed it which showed the route in the secure routes of the vpn client.  However I am still unable to reach 10.10.10.X

Does the ASA have a route to it? Is this other network somewhere on the inside of the firewall, like through another router?

These are some of the type entries I would expect to see:
From my working ASA 5510 7.22(10)

ip local pool VPNPOOL 10.10.20.20-10.10.20.30 mask 255.255.255.0
access-list VPNUSERS_splitTunnelAcl standard permit 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 10.10.20.16 255.255.255.240
route inside 10.10.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.10.10.1 1

I have 2 other networks inside that I can access from the client
10.10.100.0 and 10.10.200.0

The other network is connected via a site to site tunnel from the ASA to a fortigate 300 firewall.  Everything internally knows that the route to the 10.10.10.x network is via the internal interface of the ASA.  I just need to trouble shoot on whether the route is at least going in the right direction before I start looking into the site to site connection

03.09.2007 at 02:27PM PST, ID: 18691014
ip local pool vpnclients 10.1.10.1-10.1.10.100
access-list vpncsplit extended permit ip inside 255.255.254.0 10.1.10.0 255.255.255.0
access-list vpncsplit extended permit ip dmz 255.255.255.0 10.1.10.0 255.255.255.0
access-list vpncsplit extended permit ip host 10.10.10.70 10.1.10.0 255.255.255.0
route inside 10.1.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.1.4.8 1

Is what I have

OK, well then, the Fortigate end must also have the VPN user subnet listed in the protected subnets, and you need to have it in your acl that defines the site-site tunnel, and you have to allow intra-interface traffic
    same-security-traffic permit intra-interface
Accepted Solution

03.09.2007 at 02:44PM PST, ID: 18691124
The fortigate does have the 10.1.10.X subnet. The ACL listed for the tunnel is

access-list vpn2tat2 extended permit ip inside 255.255.254.0 host 10.10.10.70
access-list vpn2tat2 extended permit ip 10.1.10.0 255.255.255.0 host 10.10.10.70

03.09.2007 at 03:07PM PST, ID: 18691224
I have been watching the logs and I am getting a loopback error on the interface.
"Flow is a loopback"

The recommendations for the error are the following

Recommendation: To allow U-turn traffic on an interface, configure the interface with the same-security-traffic permit intra-interface command.

That is exactly what I posted in my last comment above....

03.09.2007 at 04:11PM PST, ID: 18691678
Sorry about that been very busy today thanks.  Is there any security risk with this command? And do I need to specify the interface?

03.09.2007 at 04:22PM PST, ID: 18691765
Oh and it worked thanks again

Glad to hear it. I don't believe there to be any security risks inherent in this.
