Hi Wendy,

I don't think most inexpensive and most secure really go together, but you can certainly go with an inexpensive secure solution :)

You're best solution will likely be an internet connection at both ends and a VPN.  The type of connection you use will depend on what is available in the area and if either location already has some sort of internet connection.

Then you will need a firewall at both ends and you can set up a VPN between both sites.  This would connect the two sites together securely and allow information to be exchanged between sites.  I typically use Sonicwall firewalls, but there are a large range of options in this area.  Another brand I would recommend is Netscreen.

If you don't have internet at each site already, one inexpensive option that often can provide high bandwidth would be a business cable connection.  Otherwise DSL would be another low cost solution.  A higher cost, but more reliable solution would be a T1.

We use dedicated Netscreen VPN appliances (model 5GT) to do this job.
- they are inexpensive and quick to setup (usually 1 to 2 hours to setup & test)
- use an embedded asic chipset so performance is never an issue
- antivirus (& deep inspection packet filtering) is embedded so another lan will not become a security risc. (important)
- we connect 4 sales offices in surrounding countries with 1 central site.
- works like a dream on cheap internet lines with little or no work afterwards

More about netscreen firewalls is its routing capability along with firewalling.
Also almost all kind of available extended licenses for AV, Anti-spam, etc are available easily and can be easily loaded onto the box using a single cli.
Moreover the customer support is really on toes for any kind of support.

In addition to above all the ns5gt platform has the "MODE" compatibility by which you can have more number of trust or untrust physical interfaces dedicated for your various traffic.
For example like Dual Untrust, Combined, Home-Work, etc

Netscreen firewall and especially a ns5gt would be the best buy if you are looking for smaller network.
If looking for future expansion then i would suggest you to jump on there recently launched products like SSGs best in market better than cisco when compared with performance.

Hope this helps you decide

What is this: "- use an embedded asic chipset so performance is never an issue"

ASIC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application-specific_integrated_circuit

I would agree with the above that IPSec site-to-site VPN is the way to go, but keep in mind that Juniper is going to EoL the ns5gt within the next year (although they will keep supporting them, they won't sell any more) so you might want to go with the 100 or 500 model or use cisco (not as easy to set up, but equally secure).

with ASIC is meant that a chip is included specifically designed for a task so it can perform very well.
with software a similar task can be performed on a standard server but less efficient.
so on an appliance designed for a specific task it is easier to let a specific chip do the most of the work.
