IP Address location
Hi all, I have been tasked with an ackward project. I have a public IP address. I have been asked to try and narrow down the location of the IP address as best as I can. Now, I am assuming that without a warrant, I can not get the exact location of where the IP address is. But is there a way to perhaps narrow down the city or even the community of where this IP address is located. I have tried some of the online IP address locators. I even paid for one but it was a scam... Any help or advise ?
Thanks !!
Thanks !!
Without the help of ISP provider, who owns that IP address range you won't be able to do that. And most likely ISP provider will not give you that information because of end user protection. I guess order forces (like police,...) can get that info only with court order.

If you are getting spam from that IP address, you should be able to file a complaint with their ISP. If you are getting threats, notify the police or FBI.
Enter the IP in the search box at http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

I have to agree to "not possible", and the best you can get is by analyzing traceroute results. Some ISPs name their router according to the city, region or state, so that can give hints. That is what I'm performing to get a guess of the location of an unknown IP.

There's simply no way to truely locate the IP without a court order. The info elected as answered is the best possible response to the question.
