If you disconnect a phone line the best your MaBell company (aka Verizon, AT&T, SBC or whoever) will do is put a 30 day referral on it. Basically a referral is " the # you have reached has been changed to....."
If you keep your service for awhile they can call forward all calls to your new # but they will charge you for that.
Also, remember to consider 911. 911 will only work from a landline for location purposes.
