Browse All TopicsWe have installed a Cisco VOIP system to replace out old PBX. Overall we are very happy, but we have a nagging problem.
We interfaced our old analog phones. modem lines, and faxes to the new system using VGC248 gateways. About 99% of the time faxing works perfectly. However, there is a small number of faxing destinations that cause problems. Whenever we fax to these 5 or 6 locations, the fax fails. The machines do connect, but the transmission fails. I have trying playing with the line levels to no avail. The problem is reproducible when we fax from other fax machines in our system. However, when we fax from a fax machine connected to a dedicated CentraNet line, the fax works perfectly.
I imagine, there is a setting that needs tweaked, but neither our consultants or I can find it. Any ideas?

Joe,
I made the changes indicated in your third comment (http://www.cisco.com/en/U
But, I am seeing the same results. It is interesting to note that ALL of the sites that have problems are all using old fax machines.

Since that ALL was emphasized, do you happen to have a fax machine that is known to work on the netwwork? There could be a problem that the older machines are using an older standard which the Gateway is not detecting the fax tones correctly. Also if forklifting the fax machines out are not a vialable option a work around could be building a seperate VoIP dail peer that is accessed by lets say the number "8", then we can just enable that VoIP peer to always excpect faxes diabling any compression and such.
Aslo can you post the config of the 248 and a remote site gateway that is having the problem.
Joel
I wasn't clear. All of our internal fax machines work 99% of the time to both internal and external sites. The only problem we encounter is when we fax to 5 or 6 external sites. Those sites all seem to have older fax machines, and none of the machines are under our control. The problem faxing to those machines is reproducible from any fax machine in our network.
I have just had a user give me a bit of additional info. Her HP fax retuns a "low signal level" message when she faxes to one of the problem sites. I tried monkeying with the line levels to no avail.
I recently heard of another site in our area that switched to a Cisco VOIP solution and they ended up putting all of their faxes on CentraNet lines. That seems like fixing the symtom and not the problem. I can't believe that a problem like this is unique to us, so I am going to figure it out one way or another.
So to paraphrase, faxing works across VoIP network, just few end clients have machines that are not working. Quick question do you know if you clients have problem with anyone elese? Also are the clients being served from the same central office?
Moving to Centranet, one question, do you know if the service is being delivered via T1? That could explain why the problem seemed to be fixed.
Can you call HP and find out what "low siganl level" means from thier point of view?
You said you adjusted line levels? How did you do this? Essentially you want to adjust eh dB gain of the lines to do this. Also what type of connections to the PSTN do you have for the Voice? Analog or Digital?

The answer is yes you have to set up the configs to allow for faxing, here is a link to a previous post of mine in regards to same problem:

The problem is that if you are using any other codec than G.711 for faxing the inband signaling of the fax tones become distorted.
Can you post your router configs?
