Question

How to setup a VoIP system behing ISA Server 2003

Asked by: lmjaimes

Hello,

In our company we are installing a VoIP system from Vonage (www.vonage.com), we have a Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter and acoording to the Vonage documentation we need open the following ports in the router/firewall:

SIP ports 5060 through 5061 using UDP protocol
NTP port 123 using UDP protocol
TFTP port 69 using UDP protocol
DNS port 53 using UDP protocol
RTP ports 10,000 through 20,000 using UDP protocol

How we can setup this in the ISA Server 2004? we need create an access rule and a server publishing rule to allow outbound / inbound communication with the Vonage systems?

Limber,

Link below should help: (let me know if it does not)

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/isa/2000/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/isadocs/cmt_othersvc.mspx

Here is the old cut and paste from above:

To create a protocol definition

1.

In the console tree of ISA Management, right-click Protocol Definitions, click New and then click Definition.

For array policy protocol definitions, where?

Internet Security and Acceleration Server > Servers and Arrays > Name  > Policy Elements > Protocol Definitions

For enterprise policy protocol definitions, where?

Internet Security and Acceleration Server > Enterprise > Policy Elements > Protocol Definitions

2.

In the New Protocol Definition wizard, type the name of the protocol definition and then click Next.

3.

On the Primary Connection Information page, specify the port, protocol type, and direction for the primary connection. Then click Next.

4.

On the Secondary Connections page, specify if the protocol definition includes a secondary connection. Then, specify the port range, protocol type, and direction for the secondary connection.

Hi Joel_Sisko,

The article show me how to define a protocol in the ISA Server, I know the steps, my question is what is the procedure to setup a VoIP system behind a firewall (ISA Server)?, currently we have a Phone Adapter (Cisco) from Vonage and they technical support give us instructions about open some ports in the firewall, I want know if we need setup a NAT translation on those ports or only allow outbound access on those ports?

I will appreciate If you can send the address of a web page or article that explain me how a VoIP system handles all the communication over the Internet.

Thanks :)
Limber.

Hi lmjaimes,

The article that Joel_Sisko posted should help. You'll need to set this up as two-way (symmetric) NAT.
You can find info on the NAT requirements for VoIP at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-NAT+and+VOIP

Does that help?

You have to open the ports in the firewall, only. If there is no firewall, all you have to do is to enable NAT keep alive feature in the PAP2 adapter. It works for me.
