Question

Voip with Windows Small Business Server..

Asked by: dercoss

I have a Netgear TA612V broadband voice adapter and was hoping to integrate it with my Windows SBS 2003 setup. I also have a Netgear DG834G modem/router which is only being used as a modem and for wireless work, with the windows server box carrying out DHCP duties.

The network is using 192.168.0.X with a 255.255.255.0 subnet with the modem being 192.168.0.1. The VOIP device comes with a default IP address of 192.168.61.1 but Windows Server gives it an address in the 192.168.0.X series which obviously doesn't help...

Is there anyway of getting this VOIP device to work and if so how, or is it only for simpe home setups?

Sure there are!

Your problem is that SIP does not like to be behind NAT, although there are ways around that.

1.  The simplest way to get this working is to get an ADSL modem only...no firewall.  You could then use the TA612V as your firewall / VOIP gateway, and use the DG834G as a wireless access point only.

2.  If you can't do that, then you'll need to keep the TA612V on the 192.168.0.X network.  It has to be to talk to the DG834G to access the internet.   What you will need to do is assign the TA612V a static address, with the default gateway pointing to the TA612V.   Then, on the DG834G, port forward 5060 (the SIP port) to the static address assigned to the TA612V.

Still no luck. I have tried the second suggestion and have changed the TA612V to a static IP and it is recognised as such by my Small Business Server. I have forwarded the port in the DG834G and can access the TA612V and DG834G via a web browser.

However, there is still no action.

I am still not able to make any calls with this router.

I have connected the TA612V via its internet connection to a spare connection on the DG834G but can't access the router at all.

I have followed all the advice I have found via the Netgear site but there is still no action. I can access the TA612V via a pc if I connect to the ethernet port rather than the internet port but there is still no internet connection.

Any advice...

Right... After about an hour to variou Netgear tech support people the TA612V is now back in the box and going back to the shop.

It seems that it will/won't work with a DG834G, likewise Windows 2003 Server. Netgear do/do not support it with the DG834G.

Netgear support is worse than useless. It used to be very good (I'm in England) but over the past year all support is carried out in the Far East and India and the standard has plummeted drasically.

I am now starting a new question at
