VOIP - SoftPhone X-LITE from XTEN - Ports to forward on Router

Hi

I'm using a voip service called VOIPBUSTER, but I'm interested in using it with a generic SoftPhone from XTEN called X-LITE.

I've configured a VOIPBUSTER SIP account on X-LITE and it works just fine. BUT !!!!

My problem is :

- With a ADSL modem there is no problem at all it works great.

- Behind a ROUTER it works fine if I setup a DMZ to the PC where I use the X-LITE softphone.

- The problem is that I do not want to use DMZ for security reasons.

- So I made a small research and I've got these informations :
      - PORTS TO USE WITH X-LITE :
                    - 3478, 5060 and 8000~8005 all UDP

      - SOMETHING IS WRONG BECAUSE WITH THESE PORTS I CAN'T MAKE A CALL, I GET "ERROR 408 - TIMEOUT"
      - WITH DMZ IT WORKS JUST FINE
      - SO WHAT PORTS SHOULD I USE ?????????????

I am afraid I don't have an answer for you but the Avaya phones I have been involved with require a phenomenal number of ports to be open. The recommended method by Avaya, is to set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for any phone connections. With the VPN you have a secure encrypted connection without having to open/forward any ports, and not 'wide open' like you would be with a DMZ. Just a suggestion.

Hi carlos

You need few ports to be opened if you are using SIP services.

Usual Ports: SIP Server 5060, if your Softphone is using 5060 as its port then open it for TCP and UDP.

Next is media transfer ports used by RTP and UDP which is also mentioned in the softphone configuration.

Where are you checking the logs which says 408 "Request Time out". Are you talking about the logs shown by Softphone. If possible use Etherreal to monitor and read logs.

Ports are not blocked as your log says you are getting response back for your request....

Check your codec....488 says codec mismatch..check what are the codecs allowed to be used by the phone company

DMZ ports are open

while if you are on private IP, you may have NATting done

Yes that's right with DMZ all ports are open. !!! AND IT WORKS JUST FINE.

Without DMZ I've NAT configured for ports -  3478, 5060 and 8000~8005 all UDP - BUT DOESN'T WORK so some ports must be missing.

I need to know wich ports are missing.

take a HUB

Connect the SIP device and a PC to it. Run etherreal on PC...Make call from SIP device. Etherreal will give you logs and will tell you ports which need to be opened.

BUT it didn't solve my problem because ports used with DMZ and without DMZ are the same.

I don't know what else to do.

You are right the only diference I could find is on CODEC error 488. Don't know what it means.

Dear carlos

488 means media mismatch..says Codec doesn't match on both the sides. Lets say you are using G729A and your privider doesn't support it.Do ask your provider about the codec supported and use the same.
